Ian Carmichael was so obviously ideal for the role of Lord Peter Wimsey that it's astonishing to learn from his autobiography that it took him years to persuade the BBC to make this delightful (and very popular) series. In fact, it took him too long, for the one problem with his very stylish performance is that he's a tiny bit too old for the role - he was past 50 by the time the show started in 1972. Still, he's a delight to watch in the part and the mostly very faithful adaptations of Dorothy L. Sayers's novels manage to leave out the regrettable attitudes occasionally demonstrated by that rather strange lady.
