This was one of those lessons to learn episodes. Strange Aliens arrive and a misunderstanding takes place between the adult, thanks to Dr. Smith. Meanwhile Will and the Alien boy become friends and are playing until the alien boy becomes ill. Will stays with the boy all night until they can get back to his family. When they do both adults realize that if the young boys can get past their differences then the adults should be able to as well.
This could have been one of the best episodes of the series but unfortunately Dr. Smith and is hammed up acting bring down the entire episode and its too bad. The idea of using the boys to bring the two species together and examine their differences could have played for some interesting cultural exploration. Instead Dr. Smith dominates the plot spouting long streams of dialog that bring the episode down because they don't advance the plot, they only give Dr. Smith some air time. In the end, John Robinson spouts of a lot of exposition about who they are and why they left. I suspect a scene or two was cut to make way for Dr. Smith and his dialog that would have been crucial for the episode. Obviously we can't remove our Dr. Smith moments.
Very good story line, like the episode very much.Wish there were more like it. Don Matheson appears as IDAK in the second season in “Revolt of the androids”, then on to Mark in Land of the Giants.
I noticed one blooper in the end when john confronts the aliens and will comes running up and john shoves him away, then alien throws down his weapon to his left with this left hand, the next scene, john picks up his weapon which is now located next to their transfer unit which was to the right of the alien.
