Hail To The Redskins
AIRED:
The listless waters of Washington sports were stirred up in 1971 as George Allen took over as coach of the Washington Redskins. His trades for familiar players and spending large sums for a first-rate training complex, were part of a true rebuilding program. The result: Washington made the playoffs for the first time since 1945. In shooting an hour-long film called Three Cheers for the Redskins, NFL Films was with George Allen every step of the rebuilding. Now, after 30 years, members of the 1971 Redskins are interviewed for this program. Steve Sabol chips in, explaining that some of George Allen's habits–labeling the trees just outside the Redskins' camp, for example–rubbed off on him. There was a certain eccentricity to Allen that Steve Sabol thinks about all the time.moreless

A must see for Redskins fans who care about Redskins history...this is old school...see where the Redskins Cowboys rivalry began...Billy Kilmer, Roy Jefferson and agent 00. This film shows what a great coach George Allen really was. Coach Allen was a motivator and a players coach, follow the Redskins as they begin the the winning tradition. These were the old days when players played for the love of the game and not for the money. George Allen believed in proven veterans and very few rookies made his team. A really good film about a really good team and a great Coach.moreless

    • For all that splendor of the original film, documented in a Lost Treasures episode broadcast constatntly on NFL Network, ESPN Classic has aired the original Three Cheers for the Redskins (60-minute highlights of the 1971 Washington season) in an unmolested format exactly once: 700 A.M. EDT April 19, 2002.
Some of us NFL Films afficionados would love to see the whole original Three Cheers for the Redskins broadcast in its unmolested originality, and it seems the only way we can do it is to compose a deal with public television. Anyone who reads this, should send the recommendation to Howard University Television (in Washington itself) or the MHz Networks in Falls Church, Virginia.
