  • "Lost Worlds" uses thorough research, location shoots and computer graphics to make the past come alive again.

The best history teachers tell the story of the past in a way that helps bring the people, places and events to life. The words they use paint a picture that their students can see in their mind's eye and the experience can make you feel like an actual witness the events as they unfolded.

That experience has always been a hard thing for television to reproduce. Since TV is primarily a visual medium, the images that the viewer sees are always more important than the words they hear and, therefore, poor graphics always trump the best storytelling. In recent years, however, computers have allowed television producers to create images that are higher quality than ever before and Lost Worlds uses that technology to the fullest.

But the show doesn't stop there, it also takes us to the actual sites and shows them as they look today. On top of that the producers seek out true experts who can give viewers a thorough explanation of many of the underlying factors at work behind the events that history records. The end result approaches the effect that the best teachers can create, and that's a good thing for a TV show.

With images and dialogue of the highest quality, Lost Worlds is well produced show that presents the subject in way that holds viewers' attention. This is a great show that teaches a lot and it raises the bar for historic documentaries.
