Lost Worlds

Narrator: In 1949 the Soviet Union demonstrated that like the U.S., it possessed the atomic bomb. Two superpowers had the means to destroy each other. Whatever followed, the government would still have to function, the President and key personnel had to be protected. There's a network of classified facilities from this time across the U.S. that have only recently been deactivated. Our investigators are going to unlock their secrets. They'll explore the basic shelter constructed for JFK on an island near his Florida mansion and a facility buried beneath a five star hotel from which Congress would operate in the event of war. They'll enter a building which stood for three decades in a state of readiness and is now frozen in time. They'll enter the high tech mountain fortress strong enough to survive a direct hit from a nuclear warhead. For almost half a century these facilities were on constant alert, this the lost world of secret U.S. bunkers.
