Season 3 Episode 14

Aired Sunday 9:00 PM Mar 28, 2007 on ABC

  • Trivia

    • "Mister LaShade" is an anagram for "See DHARMA List". Also, "Mr. LaShade" is an anagram for "Marshal Ed".

    • When Nikki and Howard are shown in Sydney Harbour, the location of Sydney Opera House is incorrect in the CGI make up of the Harbour. In the show, the Opera House can be seen to the right of the cityscape, where as, in real life, there is open water to the left of the Opera house.

    • It was finally confirmed how Shannon knew where the case with guns was, in "The Greater Good". Kate let the information slip.

    • Black and white ("Lost"'s recurring theme):

The scenes in Zukerman's home bring Nikki with black fingernails. Right in the next scene, in the airport, Nikki's fingernails are colored white.

    • Kate, Shannon and Dr. Arzt argued about the guns 48 days ago. 4 and 8 are two of "The Numbers".

    • The diamonds that Sawyer throws into Nikki and Paulo's grave are different from the ones used throughout the rest of the episode.

    • When Sawyer and Hurley bury Nikki and Paulo, Nikki's hands are together over her body. When Sawyer throws the diamonds in, her hands are by her side. They then return to the original position in the next shot.

    • While Hurley, Charlie and Sun are digging Nikki and Paulo's grave, Vincent runs off with the blanket that's covering their bodies. The camera then changes to Hurley, Sun and Charlie talking about Sawyer, and Charlie's confession to Sun about the kidnapping. After she leaves, the camera switches back to Nikki and Paulo's "corpses" and the blanket is back on them.

    • Shannon's hair changes length dramatically in every different scene she appears in. When she is seen in the airport (with Boone), her hair is much longer than it was originally in "Exodus: Parts 1 And 2". She is later seen in archive footage with the original hair length but in a closer shot her hair is longer again. This is due to the inaccurate wigs made for Maggie Grace.

    • Neither Boone's hairstyle nor the color of his hair match his appearance in "Pilot: Part 1". Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse admitted that Ian Somerhalder is wearing a wig for this episode because they wouldn't ask him to cut his hair for a mere two days of shooting.

    • A deleted scene for this episode included the Discharge event from "Live Together, Die Alone: Part 2", which causes Nikki to reflect on her past behavior towards her fellow castaways. ABC promotional photos for the episode depicted moments from that scene, and the full scene was included among the "Lost Flashbacks" on the season 3 DVD boxset.

    • The writers originally intended to have more gags. For example, one gag would have Nikki and Paulo finding Shannon's asthma inhaler and then discarding it. Another was to have them meeting Locke and Boone by the lake (they have shovels, as they were excavating the hatch) before they both carry on with their business.

    • Nikki and Paulo's story was originally intended to be a lot longer, but was ultimately cut short due to the huge fan backlash against those two characters. As revealed in the Season 3 DVD audio commentary for this episode, the original plan was to have an entire episode devoted to flashbacks for Nikki, only to reveal at the end of the episode that those "flashbacks" were all just part of the TV show Expose. In the actual episode, that revelation already occurs at the end of the first flashback scene.

    • Nikki and Paulo didn't had lines in present time (unless you count Nikki's dying gasps). It's the first time it happens to a character/characters in his/her/thier own centric episode.

    • Sawyer and Nikki's argument happened 4 hours before the spiders bit them. 4 is one of "The Numbers".

    • Nikki and Paulo killed Zuckerman 4 days before the plane crash. 4 is one of "The Numbers".

    • The commentary for this episode confirms that the spiders that attacked Nikki were in fact manifestations of the smoke monster. If you listen closely you can hear the monster's familiar noises before the spiders appear.

    • When Nikki throws the spider on Paulo and the spider bites him on the neck, paralysis is imminent. Instead he talks to her for a minute or two being able to move his head, blink and all. Then Nikki gets bitten in the leg and in a minute she drops down in the "dead" state. A bite in the leg would take at least a few minutes for total paralysis. She also didn't drop down and talk like Paulo did.

    • Goof: While Nikki & Paulo are drinking champagne in the airport lounge, Shannon & Boone arrive, arguing. Paulo's full glass suddenly becomes less than half full. As Boone and Shannon leave to find somewhere to sit, the glass is almost full again.

    • Continuity: In the beginning of the episode, the Zippo lighter goes from unlit to lit between shots.

    • Island events in this episode take place on December 11th 2004.

    • Paulo's line "Maybe it's a dinosaur" when discussing the monster, alludes to the now proven false rumors and discussions during the first season of Lost that the sounds and movement from the jungle was a dinosaur.

    • Goof: When Nikki and Paulo are at the airport and Paulo is reading the article about Howie's death, Nikki's dress is blurred just above her chest. It seems as if something peeked out of her dress, and the editors had to hide it.

    • In his speech from "White Rabbit," Jack mentions "Live together, die alone" which is the name of an episode in the second season. He also says, "Every man for himself" which is from the third season.

    • Continuity: After the crash, Locke warns one of the survivors to get away from the engine, he then turns and gives the same warning to Nikki before the man is sucked into the engine. However in the "Pilot" episode, when this originally happened, the camera never moved away from Locke until after the man was killed, and so we saw that he never even turned to anyone and so couldn't have spoken to Nikki.

    • Sawyer is reading "Evil Under the Sun" by Agatha Christie.

    • Numbers: 4

The sign outside the studio at the beginning of the episode clearly reads "season four." Hurley later says that the identity of the bad guy has been a mystery for four seasons.

    • When Locke approaches Paulo on the beach, he warns him that winter is coming along with high tides. However, since they are in the Southern Hemisphere, the seasons are actually reversed, and spring should be coming.

    • Numbers: 4

In the Pearl hatch, the number 22 is printed on the inside of the toilet body. 4 (2+2) is one of the numbers.

    • There was an ad for the TV show Exposé at the soccer match that Desmond was watching at the pub in the episode "Flashes Before Your Eyes".

    • In the episode "The Man from Tallahassee", Locke was watching a television program when Peter Talbot visited him, four years before Locke boarded flight 815. From the television program Locke was watching the words, "...the Cobra - he's back!" can be overheard. Nikki was a guest star in that same program, Exposé, which featured that same character, the Cobra, four years later, just before she boarded flight 815 with Locke.

    • Continuity: The airport caption tag that reads "80 Days Ago" is actually one day off, and should be 81. The last couple episodes have taken place on day 80 (since "Par Avion"), but it is now Day 81. (Further proof of this occurs in the following Nikki and Paulo scene ("75 Days Ago"), when Nikki claims they have been on the island for six days.

    • When Paulo and Nikki are at the airport and Paulo opens his bag to get the nicotine gum, we can see his Brazilian passport, but there are two spelling errors. It reads "Republica Federativa do Brazil," (with a Z on Brazil and no accent on Republica) but in the real Brazilian passport it reads "República Federativa do Brasil."

    • Numbers: 15, 16, and 42

The Exposé clapperboard says act A21, scene 39, take 3 (39+3=42). The first of the timer numbers is 15.52 and the second is 16.28.

    • The newspaper Paulo was reading in the airport was dated Thursday, September 24th 2004, which is two days after the crash occurred on September 22nd. In addition, the actual September 24th was a Friday.

    • Numbers: 8

The diamonds that Nikki and Paulo stole are worth $8,000,000.

    • Numbers: 8

The Medusa spider paralyzes its victim for 8 hours.

    • The dolls within other dolls are known as Matryoshka dolls, named after the Russian diminutive for 'Matryona', which is associated with a strong and robust Russian woman. And although it may mean nothing, the number of nested figures of the Matryoshka doll shown in the episode was three while the actual number is usually six or more.

  • Quotes

    • Kate: You have to understand, we thought it was best for everybody.
Arzt: I'm sorry, are you my mother? 'Cause she knows what's best for me, other than that, I decide.

    • Nikki: I found the diamonds, Paulo.
      Paulo: What? Where?
Nikki: Right here. Give 'em to me.
Paulo: What are you talking about?
Nikki: What am I talking about? (She pulls something out of her pack) What's this? Your nicotine gum! You wanted to stop looking for the bag because you'd already found it! I know you have them Paulo. Now where are they!?
Paulo: Calm down, okay? What the hell is that? (Nikki undoes the jar and throws the spider on Paulo) Are you out of your mind!?
Nikki: You remember Dr. Arzt's friend. Did it bite you? Does it hurt? He told me why they call it the Medusa spider. Wanna know why?
      Paulo: What did you do?
Nikki: Because one look from Medusa would turn anyone to stone; just like one bite from the spider will paralyze you for, oh, about eight hours. It won't kill you! It'll just slow your heart rate down to the point where even a doctor would have a hard time... (Paulo falls to the ground) ...hearing it beat. You won't be able to move a muscle so I'll be able to do all sorts of nasty things to you. And, since it bit you on your neck, I'd say paralysis will happen fast. I'm guessing that you have the diamonds on you. Huh? (She checks him) In the shoe, maybe? I think I know where. (She finds them in his pants) Son of a bitch.
      Paulo: I'm sorry.
Nikki: You're only sorry 'cause you got caught.
Paulo: (On the ground almost paralyzed) I was afraid of losing you. If you found the diamonds, you wouldn't need me anymore.

    • Hurley: Nikki and Paulo. I guess we didn't know you very well. But, it appears you killed each other for diamonds. But, I know there are good parts to you too. You were always nice to me. And, you were a member of the camp. And, I really loved Exposé. Okay then. Goodbye!
Sawyer: Wait. Rest in peace, Nikki and Paulo.
(Sawyer sprinkles the diamonds over their bodies)

    • Sun: Charlie told me it was your idea to kidnap me.
      Sawyer: You gonna tell Jin?
      Sun: No.
      Sawyer: Why not?
Sun: Because then we'd have to dig another grave.

    • Nikki: Okay, I know you have them. Give me a gun.
Sawyer: I don't have the guns; A-Team took 'em all.
Nikki: Right, except for the ones you kept for yourself.
Sawyer: Even if I had a gun, I wouldn't give it to you. Judging by the fire you're breathing, I got a feeling no good would come of it.
Nikki: Sawyer, give me a gun.
Sawyer: I got a better idea, sister. How 'bout you go stick your head in the ocean and cool yourself off.

    • Nikki: Did you know Thanksgiving was two weeks ago? We missed it, Paulo. Just like we're gonna miss everything.
Paulo: They're gonna find us. We'll get rescued. You'll see.
Nikki: Okay, where did this sudden burst of optimism come from?
Paulo: I don't know. I guess, it's how we look at things. Like the bag, I mean, maybe not finding it was good for us.
Nikki: How do you figure that?
Paulo: Look what it did. It might've torn us apart.

    • Sawyer: Oh, I see what this is. Villagers have got themselves some torches!
      Hurley: Did you kill them?
Sawyer: No. No, I didn't kill them. Yeah, me and Nikki went at it this morning. Because she wanted a gun.
Hurley: Why didn't you tell us this before?
Sawyer: Cause of the dirt under her nails.
      Hurley: What?
Sawyer: She was digging. And, when we found him, I saw a fresh mound of dirt. She was burying something. And if you take the time to dig a hole right before you die, then what you're hiding is probably pretty damn good.
Sun: So, what was it? What did she hide?
(Sawyer throws the bag of diamonds to Sun)
Sawyer: Go ahead, take 'em. Cause, whatever happened to those two, I had nothing to do with it.

    • Charlie: (to Sun) It was me who took you, not the Others. I wasn't myself after Locke hit me, after he humiliated me. Sawyer told me I could get even by helping him steal the guns. So, we just made it look like the Others. I didn't mean to hurt you. Sorry.

    • Hurley: (to Desmond) No offense, dude, but, as far as super powers go, yours is kind of lame.

    • Ben: Who left this open?
Juliet: Tom was down here a couple of days ago.
Ben: Have him cover it up with the plane.
(Ben turns on one of the monitors)
      Juliet: That him, Shephard?
      Ben: Yes.
Juliet: He's cute. Why are we doing this? Shephard will never agree to do the surgery.
Ben: No, I can convince him to do it.
      Juliet: How?
Ben: Same way I get anybody to do anything; I find what he's emotionally invested in and I exploit it.
Juliet: So, what? We just grab all three of them? Ford and Austen too?
Ben: No, they need to come to us.
Juliet: And, how do we make that happen?
      Ben: Michael, of course.

    • Locke: Nice night. What ya doing?
      Paulo: Nothing.
Locke: It looks like you're digging a hole. Every man's entitled to his secrets, Paulo. But, can I give you a piece of advice?
      Paulo: Please, John.
Locke: You should put the shovel away and save yourself some trouble.
      Paulo: Why is that?
Locke: Things don't stay buried on this island. The beach is eroding. Winter is coming. High tide. Whatever it is you're hiding, make sure you pick a spot that won't wash away.

    • Hurley: Okay, so they had a walkie-talkie. You think they were working with the Others? Like, how?
      Sawyer: Like Michael.
Charlie: If that's the case then why'd they kill Nikki and Paulo?
Sawyer: Who knows why those people do anything? What matters is they could be out there right now waiting to get us.
Hurley: I don't know, dude. I was with the Others, like, two weeks ago. They're on the total other side of the island.
Sun: Then who dragged me into the jungle? The Others came into our camp, they grabbed me, put a bag over my head. And, if I hadn't gotten away, they would've killed me.
Sawyer: Look, ya'll stay here. Let me see if I can see any sign of 'em. I'll do a perimeter sweep.
Hurley: Where'd you get the gun?
Sawyer: Got it off one of them.
Hurley: And when were you gonna let us know?
      Sawyer: I guess right now.

    • Nikki: It's just water, Paulo. Stop being such a wuss and dive in.
      Paulo: Why me?
Nikki: Well, as you had no trouble reminding me, I slept with Howie Zukerman. So, the least you could do is go for a swim. And Kate said they found the case on the bottom.
Paulo: Let me ask you something.
      Nikki: What?
Paulo: If you didn't need me to find that bag, would we still be together?
Nikki: That bag is worth $8,000,000. Just dive in, Paulo.

    • Nikki: Hey, what's going on?
Shannon: Kate and her two boyfriends found a case of guns that fell out of the plane, but they decided they didn't really need to tell the camp.
Kate: Look, the case is locked. The key is around Jack's neck, alright? I promise you they're safe.
Arzt: Ha! You're all out of control. The pigs are walking. Eh? The pigs are walking!

    • (Sawyer pulls a walkie-talkie out of Nikki and Paulo's luggage)
      Hurley: They had a walkie-talkie?
Sawyer: Every damn one of those bastards on the other side of the island had one exactly like this hanging from their belts.
Charlie: So, how did Nikki and Paulo get one?
Sawyer: I'll tell ya how. They were working with the Others.

    • (About Exposé)
Hurley: Only the most awesome hour of television, ever. It's like Baywatch, only better. It was about Autumn and Crystal, two strippers that solve crimes with the help of their suave, smooth-talking club owner, Mr. LaShade.
Sawyer: How'd I miss that one?
Hurley: Check it out. Look at the cast list: Nikki Fernandez. That's gotta be why she was in Australia. This must've been her big break.
      Charlie: Certainly sounds likely
Hurley: No way, Mr. LaShade was "The Cobra"?
Charlie: Is that supposed to mean something?
Hurley: Dude, "The Cobra" is this big bad guy. His identity's been shrouded in mystery for four seasons.

    • Nikki: Paulo, look.
(They see the beachcraft perched in the canopy)
Paulo: Another plane. Looks like it's been here a while.
Nikki: Go up there. Maybe there's a radio or some--
Paulo: Are you insane? If I go up there, that thing's gonna fall.
      Nikki: You're not gonna fall.
Paulo: What? Do you want me to die? Come on, let's keep going.
      Nikki: What is that?
(They see The Pearl hatch and open it)
Paulo: Okay, let's do it. Let's check it out.
Nikki: Whoa. So, our carry on bag fell from the sky, opened a man hole, crawled inside, and closed the doors behind itself? You don't wanna climb up to a plane, but, now, you wanna climb down a ladder into a dark tunnel. I don't think so.

    • Paulo: Are you sure we should be listening to a high school science teacher?
Nikki: Junior high and yes. What's your problem with Leslie, anyway?
      Paulo: Leslie?
      Nikki: Oh, you're jealous!
      Paulo: Of him? Never.
Nikki: Yeah, his spiders turn me on so much. I had to sleep with him to get the map.
Paulo: I wouldn't be surprised; you slept with Zukerman.
Nikki: I did that for us.
Paulo: Okay, I'm sorry. I just, I don't trust that guy. We should've gone to Ethan--he would've helped.

    • Nikki: What are you doing with all this stuff?
Arzt: Oh, well, uh, since we got here I've discovered twenty new species. I'm gonna be the next Charles Darwin. (Nikki picks up one of the bottles) Ah, uh. That is, uh, Latrodectus regina. Very dangerous. They call it the Medusa spider. Her pheromones are very strong. One whiff and every male of the species would be here in seconds. Not unlike you, I guess.
Nikki: So, you're probably too busy to help me then.
Arzt: Me? No. No, not-not at all. I'm fine, uh, I can help you. What can I do you for?
Nikki: Well, I'm trying to find my luggage and, since the plane broke apart over the jungle, I was wondering if you knew about trajectories and stuff.
Arzt: Ha! Do I-Do I know about trajectories? Allow me to draw you a map madame.

    • Hurley: I'm with Jin. It's the monster.
Sawyer: Yeah, because that makes the most sense.
Hurley: It does. Locke said that, when Eko died, his last words were, "you're next." And Nikki and Paulo were with them. He was talking about them.
Sawyer: He wasn't saying "you're next" about them he was saying "you're next" as in "you're all next."
Hurley: Yeah, that's not really better.
Sawyer: Alright, so here's how I see it, we wanna know what happened we got find out whatever we can about these Jabronis.
      Jin: Jabronis?
      Sawyer: Nina and Pablo.
Hurley: Dude, show some respect. You know their names; it's Nikki and Paulo.
      Sawyer: Whatever, Hugo.

    • Nikki: You are so sweet, Ethan. But, actually, we're not looking for clothes. Yeah, see Paulo, here, lost his nicotine gum.
Ethan: Ouch. You might have more luck looking inland.
      Paulo: In the jungle?
Ethan: The plane split apart when it was over the island so some of the stuff might of rained down in there.
Arzt: Boone. Boone took the water!

    • Nikki: How many times do I have to tell you? There's no such thing as monsters.
Paulo: Maybe, it was a dinosaur.
Nikki: It's not Jurassic Park, Paulo. It's the South Pacific.
Paulo: Then what was it? You saw the trees move.
Nikki: Would you start focusing!? We've been here for six days, okay. The Coast Guard is gonna get here any second and I really don't think that they're gonna take "Hey. You know what? I'm looking for my script bag." as an excuse for not getting on the rescue boat.
      Paulo: Okay. Okay.
Ethan: Hey, did you guys lose your luggage? Yeah, I lost mine too. I found some other stuff, though. So, if you need anything--pants or a sweatshirt--I can help you find some that fit. I'm Ethan, by the way.
Nikki: Hi, I'm Nikki and this is Paulo.

    • Shannon: There's nowhere to sit. No tables, no chairs, nothing. Good call, Boone.
Boone: Do you wanna just grab a chair from the restaurant?
Shannon: No, forget it. Let's just leave. You already screwed us out of seats in first class; why would you be able to find them here?
Boone: Hey, can I have this chair, please?
      Paulo: Yeah, be my guest.
      Shannon: Boone, let's just go!
      Boone: Thanks anyway.
      Shannon: Boone!
      Boone: I'm coming, Shannon.
Shannon: If you quit flirting with random guys maybe we could actually get on the plane!
Nikki: (to Paulo) Promise me we'll never end up like them.

    • (About Nikki)
Charlie: She's got gunk under her fingernails. Where'd you find her?
Sawyer: Right here. She stumbled out of the jungle, face planted, said something like "plywood," and then sianara.
Hurley: Actually, I think she said "power lines."
Sawyer: Who the hell knows what she said? She was five seconds from dying. Probably seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.
Hurley: Paulo lies! That's what she said. "Paulo lies" not "power lines." "Paulo lies."
      Sawyer: Who the hell's Paulo?
Hurley: Paulo's her husband or boyfriend or whatever. They live down the beach.
Sawyer: Well, where the hell is he? Cause, if he lies, that might be a good place to start.

    • Paulo: So, nobody else knows about this thing?
Nikki: Everything in [the safe] is way off the books.
(Paulo begins to light a cigarette. Nikki grabs it)
      Paulo: What?
Nikki: Ashes are evidence, Paulo. We poisoned him, let's not poison ourselves. (Nikki removes the diamonds from the safe) Razzle-frickin-dazzle.

    • (To Paulo after they poisoned Zukerman and took his key)
Nikki: I would've loved it if you could've figured out a way where I didn't have to eat the same food as him.

    • Nikki: Howie, the frittata is amazing.
Zukerman: It's my new chef, he's fantastic. Paulo, come in here.
      Paulo: Yes, sir?
Zukerman: Paulo, my boy, you have a new fan. I'd like you to meet Nikki.
      Nikki: The food is amazing.
Paulo: You're too kind. The secret is the, uh, shaved truffles. Luckily for you, they're in season.
Nikki: You know, you should ask for a raise.
Paulo: Excuse me. (Paulo leaves the room)
Zukerman: He just came to Sydney, heard I was hiring and showed up at my office everyday until I gave him the job. Apparently, back home, he's the, uh, "Wolfgang Puck of Brazil."

    • Zukerman: Alright, that's a series wrap for Corvette! Let's hear it for Nikki! Brilliant, Nikki, as always. You know, you don't need to die; we can bring you back next season.
      Nikki: How?
Zukerman: Well, we could say that Corvette was wearing a bulletproof vest. (Nikki undoes her jacket, revealing nothing but a bra) Bulletproof breast...
Nikki: Look, I'm just a guest star and we all know what happens to guest stars.
Zukerman: Now that your work's done here, I suppose you'll be leaving Sydney and heading back to L.A.
Nikki: No, I'm not leaving Sydney. I love you.

    • Jack: It's been six days. We all are still waiting for someone to come. We have to stop waiting. We need to start figuring things out. Now I found water, fresh water, up in the valley. I'll take in a group at first light. If you don't wanna come then find another way to contribute because every man for himself is not gonna work. If we can't live together, we're gonna die alone.

    • Sawyer: I'm telling ya, this is the trail.
Hurley: What do you know about tracking?
Sawyer: Well, I know what a footprint is.

    • (Sawyer pours out Paulo's bottled water)
Hurley: Dude, what are you doing?
Sawyer: Two people are dead. You ever think they might have been poisoned?
Hurley: That's evidence! You're messing up the crime scene!
Sawyer: Crime scene? There a forensics hatch I don't know about?

    • Hurley: Dude, Nikki's dead.
      Sawyer: Who the hell's Nikki?

    • This episode marks the fourth time characters are killed during their own episode of flashbacks

    • So far, Kiele Sanchez and Rodrigo Santoro are the regular actors that have appeared in the least episodes (6 for Nikki and 7 for Paulo out of the 14 episodes that they were in the credits for).

    • Original International Airdates:
South Africa: June 13, 2007 on Mnet

    • This marks the first time that two series regulars are killed in the same episode. (Although Ana Lucia and Libby were both mortally wounded at the same time by Michael in "Two for the Road", Libby lasts until the following episode while Ana was killed fairly instantly.)

    • This is Kiele Sanchez and Rodrigo Santoro's final episode as regulars. Nikki and Paulo were killed off due to being disliked by much of Lost's fan base. Show runner Damon Lindelof admitted that the couple were "universally despised" by fans.

    • Music: The song playing while Nikki is stripping is "Rump Shaker" by Wreckx-N-Effect.

    • Rodrigo Santoro played the part of Randy Emmers in Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle, a movie similar to the fictional series Exposé.

    • The slate board shows the fictional season finale episode of Exposé was directed by Stephen Williams, who directed this episode of Lost as well.

    • This is the first episode to show when the flashbacks are set in relation to the present time on the island. In "Three Minutes" it just stated how long ago the scenes were set, it didn't have the flashback sound effect, and "The Other 48 Days" was just one long flashback.

    • This was the first episode of season 3 in which all credited regular cast members appear. Jack and Sayid, however, only appear in previously seen footage. Also Claire appears only during the funeral scene and has no lines.

    • Actor Billy Dee Williams appears in this episode as himself, acting on the fictional television show Exposé.

    • Many of the show's critical scenes are revisited and seen from the perspective of Nikki and Paulo. Such events include Jack's "Live together or die alone" speech during "White Rabbit", the visit to the Pearl hatch from "The Cost of Living" and the plane crash from "Pilot".

    • Episode Title: "Exposé" is a French word translated to mean "exposed" and is often used to describe an exposure or revelation, often by way of an article or book, which provides shocking or surprising information. In this case, "Exposé" is the name of the show Nikki had a guest star role in prior to crashing on the island.

    • A Nikki and Paulo-centric episode.

  • Allusions

    • Sawyer refers to Nikki and Paulo as "jabronis," a term for a wrestler who is booked to regularly lose on shows (called jobbing).

    • When Nikki asks for a gun from Sawyer, he explains to her that all of his guns were taken by the A-Team. The A-Team was a TV show that ran from 1983 through 1989.

    • Zuckerman is the same name as the farmer in Charlotte's Web, Homer Zuckerman. Charlotte's Web's title character is a spider, like one of the characters in this episode, the Medusa spider.

    • Nikki's character is named "Corvette", like the sports car.

    • Sawyer is reading Evil Under The Sun by Agatha Christie. The plot of the book is a murder on an isolated island, and the key elements are a live person posing as a dead body, and the time of death not being what it appeared to be. The plot of the episode itself plays out similar to many murder mysteries.

    • Nikki and her character Corvette both use the catch phrase "Razzle Dazzle", which can be:

-A song in the musical Chicago about distracting a jury with dramatics so they won't see the truth.

-The title of a movie about the fiercely competitive world of children's dance.

-A quote from The Ron & Fez Show, said by Associate Producer "East Side" Dave starts off a weekly gossip segment with a voice over of another producer.

    • Hurley: It's like Baywatch only better.

Baywatch was a popular American tv show created by Michael Berk and Douglas Schwartz.

    • Nikki: It's not Jurassic Park, Paulo, it's the South Pacific! A reference to the Spielberg movie Jurassic Park, where an island is occupied by dinosaurs.

    • In Greek mythology, Medusa was a monster that had the appearance of a woman with snakes for hair. Anyone who looked directly at her would be so horrified that they would turn to stone. The name of the Medusa spiders is a reference to this. The spiders can paralyze with their bite, to the point where not even a doctor can tell you're alive.

The Medusa Spider was also in the movie Anaconda: The Hunt for the Blood Orchid, in which a greedy guy like Nikki uses a Medusa spider to bite his partner.

    • The line "The pigs are walking!" uttered by Dr. Arzt is a reference to George Orwell's Animal Farm. When the animals took control of the farm, all of the animals were supposed to be equal. The pigs quickly took over and began to adopt human mannerisms. The more corrupt and in control they became, the more like humans they became. When they started to walk it was a sign that there was a definite controlling group in place, similar to the way things were on the island.

    • Dr. Arzt: I'm going to be the next Charles Darwin.

Charles Darwin was an English naturalist from the 19th century who achieved lasting fame by convincing the scientific community that species develop over time from a common origin. His theories explaining this phenomenon through natural and sexual selection are central to the modern understanding of evolution as the unifying theory of the life sciences. His 1859 book, The Origin of Species, a pivotal work in scientific literature, was largelly influenced by his observations of the Galápagos Islands when traveling the globe aboard the HMS Beagle.

    • Zukerman refers to Paulo as the "Wolfgang Puck" of Brazil. Wolfgang Puck is an Austrian-American celebrity chef, restaurateur, and businessman based in Los Angeles. This is also likely to be a reference to Rodrigo Santoro's nickname in the media of "The Brazilian Tom Cruise."

    • Real Location: University of Wisconsin

Ethan is wearing a sweatshirt from the University of Wisconsin. The writers for this episode, Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis, met each other there.
