In the episode "White Rabbit" last season, Jack's father was not inside the coffin when he finds it in the jungle, Any theories? its kinda been bothering me lately. If there was already a thread on this, sorry

There was, but it disappeared with the old TvTome. Yes, it's wierd, but there may be an answer to that question yet...

It's weird how they didn't go very deep into why he wasn't in there.

    I remember this from tvtome.

First, we hear the clerk tell Jack that they can't place the body on the flight but can send it on another. Jack argues with them BUT we never hear them say "Ok, fine we'll do it." This can mean:

    - They didn't put the body on the plane
    - They eventually caved off-camera

If the body wasn't placed on the plane, then the coffin could have been from another body or perhaps an empty coffine was being shipped.

If there was a body (Jack's father or stranger) then it could have fallen out during the crash. Like, perhaps everything was secure so the items stayed inside. But the coffin opened during the pressure loss and the body fell out.

Another option is something more supernatural.

Personally, my feeling is Jack's guilt was causing the hallucinations (perhaps enhanced or generated by the island) and when he saw the coffin he was like WTF. I mean, coincidences on the island are pretty common.

    my personal extremely wacky theory

jack's father is "him" the others keep reffering too, and he faked his death so jack would go to the island (his fathers death was the reason after all)

i think you're right, when Jack saw that the coffin was empty,he was really angry, and started to smash it up,so this could mean that either the body fell out of the coffin during the crash,OR the body was never on the plane. At first I thought that the body was taken by the "others" after the crash

Jack identified his father's body before even getting the coffin.

It's possible something is going on with the body not being in the coffin, but then you'd also have to explain who or what Jack indentified in the morgue.

Yes, BUT they wouldn't let him put it on the plane. If you recall, after he identified it we see him arguing with the clerk at the airport. They were saying they couldn't fit the body onto the plane and he'd have to wait in the US for another flight to deliver it.

We never get an official outcome from that argument. Only that he really wanted the body on the plane so he could be done with this mess as soon as possible.

Yes, I got that part. Even still, that by itself doesn't mean anything. The majority of the people who survived that plane crash were not even supposed to be on the plane.

    Hurley was running late.
Sawyer was forced back to America.
    Sayid was sent back.
Locke didn't get to go on his trip.
Boone found out about Shannon's scam and brought her home. Michael's ex-wife died, and Brian didn't want to keep Walt. Sun decided not to leave Jin.
    Kate was finally catpured.

Well, with the airline not allowing his body on the plane, Jack almost had to stay a little while longer and would not have made this fateful flight.

I think that Jack's father may be alive. Rose and Locke were both disabled/dying and now they're fine, so is there any chance that Jack's Dad is in the same boat?

Maybe Jack's dad faked his death, and the body that Jack identified was not his father, but I'm pretty sure the creators said that when someone dies they stay dead.

Yeah they did say that. I think it was a white-rabbit leading him to his dad.

He needed it to be finished.

In the show i mean, but then again maybe this story about the empty casket will never actually be explained in the show, maybe the writers made it look like its upto the viewers to decide what happened?i dunno, probably not, hopefully it will be explained in the show.

I think there are lots of things that will end up annoyingly not being explained.

Because they made so many at the beginning of the show.

I posted this before a while back but its interesting so...

While Jack is running tru the jungle in the Pilot he passes a white shoe on a tree, further on in the show we see the "ghost" of his dad wearing the same white shoes, hence the body was in fact on the plane. However it wasnt in the coffin so it fell out/taken out after falling, I wouldnt be surprised if his  dad came back to life like Lockes legs being healed, maybe one day the  others will come face to face with jack and reunite him with his father for a heart wrenching scene!

In other words lost is the best show ever
