I posted this before a while back but its interesting so...

While Jack is running tru the jungle in the Pilot he passes a white shoe on a tree, further on in the show we see the "ghost" of his dad wearing the same white shoes, hence the body was in fact on the plane. However it wasnt in the coffin so it fell out/taken out after falling, I wouldnt be surprised if his  dad came back to life like Lockes legs being healed, maybe one day the  others will come face to face with jack and reunite him with his father for a heart wrenching scene!

In other words lost is the best show ever

No one comes back to life on the island.  The creators already said that when someone dies, they are really dead.

I don't understand why this is seen as such a big mystery.  It might not mean anything at all.  It could just mean that the airline had a problem (which is that really so hard for people to believe?  I'd be more surprised if the airline didn't have any problems) and wasn't able to put his father on the plane.

Absolutely, no-one comes back to life. Jack's father is very dead. But where the hell did the body go?

The corpse beat Jack home (or at least to LA).

The body probably went on the next flight.  The stewardess (or cashier) was saying the body would have to be shipped in a seperate flight and Jack would have to wait for it.  The coffin could have been an empty coffin (like, a company delivering a coffin to funeral home X.  Or, a body (Jack's dad or stranger) fell out of the casket during the plane snapping in 2 and got sucked out via the decompression.

    So either:
    • Rotting in the US
    • Sitting on top of a tree, rotting away
    • Digesting in some animals stomach after it found a body in the middle of the woods.

it was probably just another one of those storylines which they put in there so they could maybe come back to it later if they wanted. when you think about it, most of the first season was just unanswered questions. So if they feel like writing an episode in the future to answer them, they will.

Maybe we well see moer of Jack's dad's coffin in season 5 or something

My theory is that the island heals pre-existing conditions, but not things that happen on the island. Rose's cancer and Locke's legs are fixed and Jacks dad comes back to life and wanders the forest, but anything happens afterwards and they're on their own. Sort of the opposite of insurence companies. Yes its a stupid theory.
