I was reading the Penny-Island thread, which gets into Libby, Hurley and the numbers.

I'm now confused about why Hurley was in the insane asylum. I thought it was because of him using the numbers and the bad stuff that happened after winning the lottery. But it was in the asylum that he found out about the numbers in the first place. So I'm wondering if anyone knows why he was in the asylum.

That's not why he was in the asylum. In the episode "Dave", he talks to his doctor about "the accident" (we have yet to see what it was) that caused eight people to die, which Hurley blamed himself for, and became increasingly withdrawn, so his mother committed him to the asylum.

Later, when he got out - presumably after shutting Dave out of the window / his life, he recovered - he used the numbers that he had heard Leonard repeating over and over to win the lottery. He only met Leonard IN the asylum, so it wouldn't have made sense for him to have used the numbers beforehand.

I think we will probably see the nature of "the accident" in the next Hurley flashback.

Actually, they do tell us what the accident was in "Dave". Hurley stepped out on a porch and it collapsed causing 2 people to die.

Two, was it? I guess I have those numbers stuck in my head.

I thought it was "board", not porch. It's still unclear as to what actually happened.

The boat was in fact Rousseau's ship. It shipwrecked because of Hurley's sheer weight. Hurley managed to paddle back home.

Seee!!! Everything in Lost is tied together!!!
