Season 1 Episode 16

Aired Sunday 9:00 PM Feb 16, 2005 on ABC

  • Trivia

    • At the beginning of the episode when young Sawyer's mother is putting him under the bed, a man shouts "Brooke, open the door" but Sawyer says later his mom's name is name Mary.

    • Whispers can be heard when Sawyer is in the jungle. There are tracks being played on the Left, Right and Center audio track channels simultaneously. Decoded they translate as:

"How could you say that? I knew he was American"
      "It was a large group"
      "It'll come back around"
Frank Duckett's Voice- "Now listen. Here's what we should do. Nothing. It's not the one. He's coming up on the gate."

"How could you say that, I knew he was American"
"Hey listen, come on let's go"
"Go and see what he's doing"
"Duetch negg or Joice leg" (perhaps another language or reversed)
      "Like it's your choice"
"He's coming up on the gate"
"My guess is to shoot the pig" or "Guess he'll shoot the pig"
      "My [hand/head] is free"

"How could you even say that, I knew he was an American"
"Hey listen, come on lets go"
"Go and see what he's doing"
"He's coming up on the gate"
"My guess is to shoot the pig..."
"Okay" Female Voice- "Maybe we should just talk to him"
Male Voice- "No if he see us it will ruin everything"
Male Voice- "What did he see"
Female Voice- "They could help us"
      Male Voice- "Can't trust"
      Male Voice- "Come back around"
(Sawyer pauses, crickets and cicada are heard)
Male Voice- "What did he see"
Male Voice- "Nothing, he was following it"
      Female Voice- "Speak"
      Male Voice- "Nothing"
Frank Duckett's Voice- "It'll come back around"

Whispers heard by Sawyer on the beach (same thing as above applies):

"There goes another poking his head in here" or "There goes somebody"
"Yeah, let's see what he's doing"
      "Let me decide"
      "Come back"
      "I see another one"
Frank Duckett's Voice- "It'll come back around"

"Oh my god there's a guy out there"
"Dennis find out what's going on"
      "Did he see us?"
      "Open it"
"Did you see what direction he went?"
      "Right through those trees"
      "Go and get him"
"There is [an explanation/a resolution] and I bet you haven't thought of it"
      "What is it?"
"He's been in a plane crash"
      "Are you sure?"
"I know what it's like for a plane to crash"
      "Complain, complain, complain"
      "I want to get closer"
"I know what you said, but he's looking around"
"What if he shoots us or something"

"There may be something, but it may be slack"
      "Let's go"
      "Has he seen us?"
      (Alarms go off)
      "I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry"
      "Intruder, Intruder"
      "Hide against the bushes"
      "Open the door"
"I know what it's like for a plane to crash"
      "Complain, complain, complain"
"I know what you said, but..."

    • During the game of "I Never", the amount of liquid in the alcohol bottle changes, being almost empty half way through the game to being full again toward the end.

    • Hurley said that Charlie shot Ethan 4 times. However, in "Homecoming", it was clear that he shot him 6 times.

    • This is the first episode that doesn't feature Boone or Shannon.

    • Just after Sawyer finds his blue tarp at the base of the tree and is walking towards the camera, watch the right-hand side of the screen very carefully. You will see something blue move, as well as a shadow which is not Sawyer's. A crew member, or something more sinister...?

    • When Sawyer and Kate are playing "I Never" at the fire, you can see that there is black nail polish on Sawyer's right hand, which is not there when they drink coffee in the morning with Locke.

    • Numbers: 4

Hurley mentions that Charlie shot Ethan 4 times in the chest.

    • Island events in this episode take place on October 20th, October 21st and October 22nd 2004.

    • Sawyer hears the 'voices' that Sayid heard earlier, and they are saying "It will come back around." These were the last words of the man Sawyer killed in Sydney.

    • Sawyer is the first castaway to realize he had a before-crash connection to another survivor (Jack) on the island.

    • In the first scene in Sydney the camera pans from the opera house toward the rich North Shore area, except it shows that there are no houses on the shore whatsoever. In reality there are houses and apartment blocks scattered all across the shoreline.

    • When Hurley and Charlie go to bury Ethan, there's a perspective shot from just behind the body showing the boys talking and the actor playing Ethan's body was breathing.

    • In the beginning, when Sawyer gets ready to go hunt the boar (after his trip in the mud), he talks to Kate. If you look closely at his neck when he is standing up, especially when he says ''Now if you'll excuse me, I've got some revenge to attend to'', you can see part of the makeup peeling off

    • Response: When Sawyer buys the gun from the guy at the docks - when the camera pans from the Opera House, where has the Harbour Bridge gone? And there are no fishing docks on that side of the harbour - that's North Shore where all the "richies" live.

    • Despite the torture Sawyer received from Sayid and Jack, there is not a mark on his body.

  • Quotes

    • Shephard: I have a son. He's about your age. He's not like me. He does what's in his heart. He's a good man. Maybe a great one. And right now, he thinks that I hate him. He thinks I feel betrayed by him. But what I really feel...is gratitude and pride because of what he did to me. What he did for me. It took more courage than I have. Hmm. There's a pay phone over here. I could pick it up, and I could call my son. I could tell him about all of this. I could tell him that I love him. One simple phone call, and I could fix everything.
      Sawyer: Then why don't you?
      Shephard: Because I am weak.

    • Shephard: This business that you have, will it ease your suffering?
      Sawyer: Yeah.
Shephard: Then what are you doing here?
      Sawyer: It ain't that simple.
Shephard: Of course it is. Unless you want to end up like me, of course it is.

    • Locke: My sister, Jeanie, died when I was a boy. Fell off the monkey bars and broke her neck. And my mother, well, my foster mother she blamed herself, of course. Thought she wasn't watching close enough. So, she stopped eating, stopped sleeping. The neighbors started talking, afraid she might do something to herself, I guess. Oh, that's good. Anyway, about 6 months after Jeanie's funeral this golden retriever comes padding up our driveway, walks right into our house, sits down on the floor and looks right at my mother, there on the couch. And my mother looks back at the dog. After about a minute of this, of them both staring at each other like that, my mother bursts into tears. Beautiful dog, no tags, no collar, healthy, and sweet. The dog slept in Jeanie's old room, on Jeanie's old bed and stayed with us until my mother passed 5 years later. Then, disappeared back to... wherever it was she came from in the first place.
Kate: So, you're saying the dog was your sister?
Locke: Well that would be silly. But my mother thought it was. Thought that Jeanie had come back to tell her the accident wasn't her fault... let her off the hook.

    • Kate: Did you get all the guns back?
      Jack: All except one.
      Kate: Who?
Jack: Let me give you 3 guesses.
      Kate: Sawyer.

    • (Sawyer is attempting to track the boar.)
Kate: It's a foot print. Based on the weight and the distance between strides, I'd say you've been following Boone for about an hour.
      Sawyer: Look...
Kate: It could be Charlie, I suppose.
Sawyer: I'm tickled you're taking such an interest in my affairs. I really am. So don't take it personal when I tell you...
      Kate: I want carte blanche.
      Sawyer: What?
Kate: It's simple. You can't track this boar without my help. Over the last few hours you have managed to follow the tracks of humans, birds, a rock slide, yourself, basically everything except boar. You have no idea what you're doing.

    • Sawyer: I've never been in love.
Kate: You've never been in love?
      Sawyer: I ain't drinking, am I?

    • (during Kate and Sawyer's game of "I Never")
Sawyer: I never cared about having carte blanche because I just wanted to spend some time with the only other person on this island that just don't belong.
Kate: (Kate drinks.) I never carried a letter around for 20 years because I couldn't get over my baggage.
Sawyer: (Sawyer drinks) I never killed a man.
      (Kate drinks, then Sawyer drinks.)
Sawyer: Well, looks like we got something in common, after all.

    • Kate: There are hoof marks everywhere.
Sawyer: It ate all our stuff?
Kate: Nope. It ate your stuff. Mine's fine.
Sawyer: Oh, that hog's gonna suffer. I swear to God.

    • Sawyer: Awww, son of a -- ohhh, peed on my shirt! Took my shirt out of the bag and peed on it! And you say this ain't personal.
Kate: He thinks the boar we're after has a vendetta against him.
      Locke: Uh-huh.
      Sawyer: That's 3 times it's attacked me.

    • Sawyer: I take comfort knowing that someday this all going to be a real nice shopping complex. Maybe even an auto mall. Where you going?
Kate: (pointing) Know what that is?
Sawyer: A hole in the mud.
      Kate: It's a wallow.
Sawyer: What the hell's a wallow?

    • (Sawyer comes up to Jack and pulls his gun out)
      Sawyer: Stick 'em up.
      Jack: Trying to be funny?
Sawyer: Yeah, I was fresh out of pies to throw at you. Here you go, sheriff.

    • Claire: Hey.
Charlie: Hi. How are you feeling?
Claire: Very pregnant. I had some dreams last night. Actually, more like memories. You were in them.
      Charlie: Sorry.

    • Sawyer: What could possibly make us even for the Tampa job?
Hibbs: How about the known whereabouts of the man that ruined your life?

    • Sayid: Boar took your tarp?
Sawyer: It was dark, but yeah, I'm pretty sure it was a boar.
Sayid: I thought the boar had vacated this area?
Sawyer: Well, genius, I think we got some bad info.
Sayid: What was he doing inside your tent?
Sawyer: It was staring at me. Then it came at me, so I hit it, and it ran off into the jungle.
Sayid: With you tarp? Perhaps he wanted to go camping?
      Sawyer: You enjoying yourself?
      Sayid: Yes.
Sawyer: Well, laugh it up, Mohammad. But I come back and find my stuff's gone, I'm coming after you.

    • Kate: Maybe it's got your scent, doesn't like your cologne?
      Sawyer: I don't wear cologne.
      Kate: Yes you do!
Sawyer: Yeah ... well, the thing's got it in for me.
      Kate: It's a boar, Sawyer.

    • Sayid: You're not alone, Charlie. Don't pretend to be.

    • Hurley: Did you ever get that Gulf War syndrome?
Sayid: That was the other side.
Hurley: Oh, right. Then what's the one when you're all, like, shell-shocked?
      Sayid: Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
Hurley: Yeah, that's it. You ever have that?
      Sayid: Why do you ask?

    • Kate: A boar did all this?
Sawyer: Last night, wrecked my tent. This morning when I went to get my tent back it attacks me from behind and runs off into the jungle like a coward.
Kate: A boar wouldn't just attack you for no reason.
Sawyer: Thank you, boar expert. This one did. It's harassing me. (Sawyer gets the gun)
      Kate: What are doing?
      Sawyer: Getting even.
Kate: Would you listen to yourself? It's a boar. Just go tell Locke and he'll kill it.
Sawyer: Nope. This is my fight.

    • (Kate and Jack are discussing how to get the 9MM handgun back from Sawyer)
Kate: I can get it back.
Jack: Really? How are you going to do that?
      Kate: I speak his language.
Jack: We've done this before, Kate, and if I remember it right---you made out with him, and he didn't even have what you said you could get.
Kate: Well, I only made out with him because torturing him didn't work.
Jack: Let him keep the gun. It's not worth it.
Kate: Are you afraid he's going to shoot me if I ask?
Jack: I just don't want you to owe him anything.

    • Charlie: Hurley, look, I appreciate the help. You don't have to. I killed Ethan, I can bury him.
Hurley: Yeah, 'til he raises from the dead. Dude, I know how this works. This is going to end with you and me running through the jungle screaming and crying. He catches me first because I'm heavy and I get cramps.

    • Shephard (to Sawyer): You know why they call it 'down under?' Because it's closest to hell without getting burned.

  • Notes

    • The Van in the Flashback reads "Sweet Shrimp". In Australia, the more common word for the item of food is prawn. Even despite the known saying "Shrimp on the Barbie". Possible explanation is that either the writers or character were unaware of this. This seems most likely as the character who owned the van was American, and would have called them shrimp.

    • There's a deleted scene called "A deal's a deal":

Kate and Sawyer are back at the beach, and she brings up the carte blanche, and she tells him "A deal's a deal".

    • For the first time, Maggie Grace (Shannon) and Ian Somerhalder (Boone) didn't appear. Malcolm David Kelley (Walt), Daniel Dae Kim (Jin), Yunjin Kim (Sun) and Harold Perrineau (Michael) appeared, but had no lines.

    • International Airdates:
      - Denmark: April 22, 2005 on Kanal 5

    • This episode was nominated for the 2005 Emmy Award for Outstanding Single-Camera Sound Mixing for a Series. This episode won the 2006 Eddie Award for Best Edited One-Hour Series for Commercial Television.

    • Brittany Perrineau, who plays the role of the woman that Sawyer takes back to his hotel room, is the real life wife of Harold Perrineau Jr., aka, 'Michael'.

    • A Sawyer-centric episode.

  • Allusions

    • Pursued
Sawyer's story is the same as Robert Mitchun's character in this 1947 western. Set in New Mexico around the turn of the century and told in flashback, the film tells the story of Jeb (Mitchum) whose entire family was slaughtered when he was a young boy. The vision haunts him into adulthood while he spends his time looking for the men responsible for the killings.

    • "Sawbucks": This is Hibbs' nickname for Sawyer. A sawbuck is old slang for a ten-dollar bill.

    • Jack: That's why the Red Sox will never win the damn series. The Red Sox, until 2004, had gone 86 years without winning a World Series. We "believed" that it was The Curse of the Bambino, started when Babe Ruth was sold to the Yankees, that prevented the team from winning. In Boston, we used to get pretty passionate about the curse, thinking it was "fate", much like Jack's father, when it was really just an excuse.
