I've been fairly depressed lately. I just finished watching 24, one of the greatest thrillers on TV ever, and I couldn't help but be sad at the wonderful, tearjerking ending that it provided. I wondered, what the hell can I watch now to not get bored?
Lost has been under my radar for quite a while. I heard about it around the same time I heard about 24, since both are very popular shows.
I knew the basic story of the show. There are a few dozen survivors of a sudden plane crash on some island that nobody knows about. Now the first half of this episode is just that. The plane has crashed and the survivors are all going crazy and freaking out.
Jack, the main character (still not as awesome as Jack Bauer) spends the first half healing the wounds of all of the wounded. He's apparently a doctor that has no fear, so he goes around and patches everyone up with the twigs, sand, and a few pens. After the crash site is secure and the people have sort of calmed down, they try to start a fire to alert SOMEBODY that might be looking for the missing plane.
To assist in the situation, Jack realizes he has to find the site of the cockpit (which seperated from the main cabin during the crash) and get this radio thingy that can alert the air traffic guys the position of the survivors. Unfortunately, it appears that the island is cursed with some maneating monster, inconvinent rain storms, and a dog that seems to stalk the main character wherever he goes.
Overall this was an interesting beginning to what I would've thought was a horror movie if I didn't know better. The characters seem very well written from what I can gather and the mysteriousness of the island situation is something I look forward to getting some answers to eventually.

One of the best pilot episodes I have ever seen in my entire life. I was just blown away by this episode. This didn't even feel like a TV show, more like an epic film in theaters. The direction, cinematography (the best), the writing, even the acting impressed me beyond me belief.

This show doesn't really have a star studded cast but I think that's what makes the show so awesome, because you get to see new talent, and fresh non cliche characters. I was impressed by each and every character, not to mention the whole time, I was at the edge of my seat.

This pilot proves to be wildly intriguing, just well done in general, and just an entertaining watch. The 43 minutes went flying by and the end just left me wanting more. Why haven't I seen this before? That's what I asked myself after watching this episode six years after it aired on DVD.moreless

Influential, well-written, legendary, tremendous and amazing are just a few of the expressions you could use to describe the first ever installment of Lost. One of the greatest pilot episodes for a program ever, it was clear from the day the 12 million dollar budget was approved that this show was going to become a major hit.

The acting was strong, the directing superb, and the plot original and mind-boggling. Never before has a show generated such a rabid fanbase which has Lost-themed parties, zooms in on screen caps to pick up clues and discusses the show almost as often as they sleep. Many shows hire one talented actor and script a formulaic pilot episode and think that they'll have a hit. It was clear the planning for Lost was second to none. From the numbers to the impressive casting to the countless memorable quotes, this was quite simply one of the most amazing episodes of television.

When people look back on the 2000's decade Lost will be one of the things it is most remembered by.moreless

A sudden plane crash... that's all it was supposed to be!

no Jacob, no this, no that... this show LOST it's touch and we all know that so it represents such a disappointment to me... but let's be honest... it was great since episode 01, up until season 6 started... and that's something we can't forget... so this is probably the greatest Pilot ever and a start of the best season of Lost... back when everything was spooky and scary and characters were new and fresh (now i just cant stand them) and when we all thought writers are smart people having some idea of where they were going...

best directing in an episode i have ever seen

    • Goof: The Oceanic airplane is supposed to be a Boeing 777, but when you see Jack running through the wreckage you can see that the main landing gear of the plane has only 4 wheels instead of the six a B-777 would have. Also, when Kate, Jack and Charlie reach the front section of the plane, in several shots where you can see the instruments of the cockpit, there are 3 engine indicators instead of the two a 777 would have. Edit
    • "Black and white" myth: Charlie put white tape on his fingers, and write "Fate" with a black marker. Edit
    • There's a deleted scene that takes place during the night: Hurley approaches Locke, and asks him if he wants to eat chicken or lasagna (food he recovered from the plane). Locke doesn't answer, and stares at the sky. Hurley leaves. Edit

    • The scene where Jack asks Kate to sew up his back injury was the audition scene used to select the two actors to play Jack and Kate. Edit
    • The character of Sawyer was meant to be a slick New Yorker but the writers liked Josh Holloway's audition so much they changed him into a Southener. Edit
