Season 4 Episode 1

The Beginning of the End

Aired Sunday 9:00 PM Jan 31, 2008 on ABC

  • Trivia

    • Numbers: Hurley is playing Connect 4 at the mental hospital

    • Kate joining up with the rest of the group at the cockpit marks the first time that all of the living, free survivors of Flight 815 have been in the same location at the same time since "Live Together, Die Alone".

    • Number 8: Hurley's car chase was aired on Channel 8.

    • Goof: When the detective tells Hurley that he can put him in the nut house, Hurley responds by hugging him. Over the detective's right shoulder, during the over the shoulder shot of Hurley, you can clearly see the left hand of the camera operator and most of the lens.

    • When Hurley is shown playing "Connect Four" in the mental institution, he states "How about best out of 7?" This is the same thing that Sawyer said to Hurley when they were playing ping pong on the island. "Connect Four" is also the same game that Hurley had played with Leonard when he had first heard the "numbers" and 4 is actually on of The Numbers.

    • Blood covers Bernard's right cheek just before he hugs Rose but when Rose looks at his face after the hug, the blood disappears. Furthermore, earlier on in the episode there was no blood on his right cheek while he was talking with Hurley about the cannonball.

    • Jack has lost a lot of weight between "Through The Looking Glass" and this episode despite only taking place minutes apart. In reality this was because actor Matthew Fox was filming "Speed Racer" during the summer hiatus.

    • The scene at Jacob's cabin was also filmed with Hurley in the rocking chair. This might have been a red herring, to prevent leaks by the crew. Likewise, Hurley's underwater vision was filmed in an aquarium (the same set used for The Looking Glass's moon pool), but Charlie was later added in.

    • Randy Nations, who is a middle management boss for whom both Hurley and Locke have worked, is seen filming the end of the car chase with a camera. This despite its cap still being on.

    • When Hurley is in Jacob's cabin, whispers can be heard which decode as:

"You have to believe it's me, Nikki"
      "Did anyone say something?"
      "I said nothing"
"You better not say a f**king thing or talk about Desmond"
      "It's Me"
      - Man: "Come to me, I need you. You're an alchemist and uh..."
      Woman: "I need-"
Man (Sounds like Christian Shephard): "Sarah, Is somebody coming?"
Woman: "They must be coming, you-"
      Man: "Hush! One of these-"
      (Shushing- shhh, shht!)
      Woman: "Richard!"
      Man: "Come with us."
      Woman: "Here's the recipe."
Man: "Oh thank you, I thought I'd lost-"
      Hurley: "Uh oh."

    • It's revealed that 6 people from the crash left the island. In "Exodus: Part 1", Rousseau said that (with her) was 6 people from her team that arrived to the island.

    • When Matthew Abbadon visits Hurley, there's a chess set on the table where they sit. Another reference to the "Black And White" theme.

    • Randy Nations and Walton (Ana Lucia's ex partner) become the second and third characters (after Sarah, Jack's ex-wife) to appear in flashbacks and flashforwards without ever appearing in the present.

    • This is the first season premiere to begin off the island (though initially we are led to believe its on island).

    • Island events take place on Dec. 21, 2004. It is day 91 for the survivors.

    • As of season 4, Jack (Matthew Fox) has appeared off-island (in flashbacks and flashforwards), in every season opener and season finale so far.

    • During the scene where Hurley is talking with Matthew Abbadon a drawing of an island, shark and boat can be seen behind them. These are all staples of the show.

    • Jorge Garcia did the painting that Hurley has outside the hospital ground before Charlie appears.

    • The letters "H" and "O" come up several times in this episode. This is interesting because "H" is the 8th letter of the alphabet and "O" is the 15th (815). Charlie first appears to Hurley in this episode near the "Ho-Ho's." When Hurley is in the mental institution "H" and "O" can be seen in the background. Also, when Hurley and Jack play Horse in the gym they stop after Jack gets the first to letters, "H" and "O."

    • Christian Shephard is seen in Jacob's cabin wearing a single white tennis shoe - the other shoe was seen hanging from a branch on the beach in "Pilot, Part 1".

    • During Hurley's car chase in the beginning of the episode, you can see a sign that says "ALOHA". It is from an ALOHA gas station, which can be found in Hawaii, where "Lost" is recorded.

    • The Camaro Hurley was driving in his flash forward was the same Camaro he had worked on previously with his absentee father.

  • Quotes

    • Hurley: Jack you there dude, beach to Jack, come in Jack. Beach to Jack
Jack: Right here Hurley, whats up?

    • Jack: Yeah. Still have to sign some autographs when I go out for coffee. Thinking about growing a beard.
Hurley: You'd look weird with a beard, dude.

    • Kate: Are you thinking of Charlie?
Jack: (Watching inside fuselage) Feels like a hundred years ago that we came out here together. (pause) How did this happen?

    • Charlie: I am dead...But I'm also here.

    • Hurley: I wanna do a cannonball. I've been walking up and down this beach everyday and looking out at this water. And I wanna do a cannonball.
Bernard: Hurley, You wanna do a cannonball? Cannonball.

    • Kate: Thunder's getting louder.
      Jack: That's not thunder.
(they see that the sound is a helicopter)

    • Hugo: I'm not listening to this. NO! Cause you're not here.
Charlie: I am here, you're being a baby.

    • Jack: Where is it?
Ben: Ok I probably should have told you that I saw her take the phone but you beat me up, Jack. I owed you one.
Jack: What are you talking about?
Ben: Kate took it when she hugged you. ... She found the right trail too but you wouldn't listen to her, so I guess she's taken matters into her own hands. But look on the bright side, at least somebody around here knows what the hell they're doing.

    • Jack: You're telling me she stopped bleeding here?
Rousseau: No. I'm telling you that she fooled us. Doubled back.
Ben: Better call the boat. Tell 'em she's getting a real big bundle of firewood.

    • (The phone rings)
      Kate: That's our ride.

    • Desmond: We need to get to Jack. We can't let him get in touch with that boat.
Sawyer: Easy Scottie, everything's cool, boat's on the way.

    • Mike: You wanna know a funny coincidence?
      Hurley: Sure.
Mike: I knew someone on your plane.
      Hurley: Really?
Mike: Her name was Ana-Lucia Cortez, she was my partner before I made detective. Dark hair, gorgeous. Maybe you knew her... maybe you met her on the plane, before it took off?
      Hurley: Sorry, never met her.

    • Hurley: I'm gonna close my eyes and count to five, and when I open them you'll be gone.
      Charlie: I am here.
      Hurley: One!
      Charlie: Don't do this.
      Hurley: Two!
      Charlie: They need you.
      Hurley: Three!
      Charlie: They need you, Hugo.
      Hurley: Four!
Charlie: You know they need you!
      Hurley: Five!
      (Charlie disappears)

    • Charlie: (To Hurley) I am here, you're being a baby.

    • Locke: She didn't cover for anyone. She wants her people to come here. And trust me, when they go we had better be far away from here. I'm going to the Barracks. The Others abandoned them. It's the only place on the Island with any form of security right now. It'll have to do until I can think of something else. Until then, if you wanna live, you need to come with me.
Jack: No-one's going anywhere with you, John. Because they're not crazy.
Hurley: He's not crazy. What about Charlie? Charlie went down to that place so we could all be rescued. And whatever he did down there, it worked. But then something must have happened. He must have heard something before he... (Pauses) I don't know why, but he changed his mind ... Because the last thing he did was to warn us that the people on that boat are not who they said they were. So I'm not listening to you. I'm listening to my friend. I'm listening to Charlie.

    • Sawyer: I'm gonna head up and tell em to slow down.
      Hurley: I can keep up.
Sawyer: All right ese... Just holler if you need me.

    • Sawyer: You wanna talk about it?
      Hurley: Talk about what?
Sawyer: Charlie. I mean, you two were buddies, I just thought...
Hurley: We'll probably get to Jack faster if we don't talk.

    • Locke: I know I, I have a lot of explaining to do. But, I never did anything to hurt any of you. I even risked my life to tell you there was a traitor in your midst. (He points to Juliet).
Jack: She helped us, John. All you ever did was blow up every chance we had of getting off of this island. You killed Naomi.
Ben: Well, technically, he didn't kill her, yet.

    • Parachutist: Are you Jack?
(Jack and Kate look with apprehension)

    • Sawyer: Look, we gotta call the Doc.
Sayid: Did you listen to Desmond? Charlie wrote on his hand.
Sawyer: Look I'm sorry he's dead. But I don't even know what the hell "not Penny's boat" means.
      Sayid: Calling Jack accomplishes nothing.
Juliet: It would accomplish warning him.

    • Kate: Are we really going home?
Jack: Yeah, we're really going home.

    • Sun: I can't believe I'm going to have my baby in a hospital!
Claire: Oh, rub it in why don't you.

    • Ben: Jack, with your permission, I'd like to go with John.
      Jack: He's all yours.

    • Sawyer: What the hell's gotten into you, Hugo? They'll all be back in the morning. If we just wait...
Hugo: You don't wait with warnings. You... warn.
Sawyer: (taking his rifle) Here I was thinking I was gonna get a good night's sleep.

    • Hurley: I don't think we did the right thing, Jack. I think it wants us to come back.
      Jack: Hurley.
Hurley: And it's going to do everything it can...
      Jack: We're never going back!
      Hugo: Never say never, dude...

    • (Sawyer is going to Locke's group)
      Kate: What are you doing?
Sawyer: Same thing I've always done, Kate... surviving.

    • Charlie: I wanna talk to you. Come on. Don't do what you did in the store. OK? There's no need to... freak out.
Hugo: No need to freak out? I'm trying to buy some jerky and a slushee, and suddenly you're standing there over by the ho-hos. You're dead. What do you expect me to do?

    • Hugo: Did I ever tell you I won the lottery? I got, like, $150 million. Worst thing that ever happened to me.
Bernard: Oh, yeah, who needs $150 million, right?
Hugo: Now it'll all be gone, cause they all think I'm dead. When we get rescued, and I go back... I'm gonna be free.

    • Ben: Everyone who stays here is going to die. Now get Alex and get away right now. I don't care where you go. just go. I will not have my daughter...
Danielle: (punches Ben in the face) She's not your daughter!

    • Locke: All I have ever done, has been in the best interest of all of us.
      Jack: Are you insane!?!

    • Claire: You know you must be very proud with Bernard, I hear he's quite the hero.
Rose: But everyone up here knows, that the real hero is your man, Claire. If Charlie didn't turn off that gizmo, we'd still be getting a busy signal on that fancy phone. So you better make sure you treat him real good, when he get back.
      Claire: Rose!

    • Kate: (About Naomi) Why would Locke kill her, he hadn't even met her?
      Jack: Cause he's crazy.
Kate: So, what if he comes back?
Jack: If he comes back, I'm gonna kill him.

    • Hurley: I'm one of the Oceanic 6!

  • Notes

    • This is Dominic Monaghan's last main cast credit as Charlie, though he technically makes a guest starring appearance.

    • This episode marks the official death of Naomi, giving John Locke his 1st ever Kill in the show.

    • Jeremy Davies, Ken Leung and Rebecca Mader have been added to the main credits.

    • Harold Perrineau is once again credited as a main character having left the show at the end of season 2. Despite having his name in the opening titles he does not appear in this episode.

    • First appearances by Lance Reddick and Jeremy Davies.

    • Although credited, Harold Perrineau, Ken Leung and Rebecca Mader do not appear in this episode. Daniel Dae Kim appears but has no dialog.

    • This is the first season premiere that was not Jack-centric, although it can be argued that his brief scene watching Hurley on television constitutes a flashforward. It's also the first season premiere that didn't open with a shot of someone's eye.

    • This episode introduces yet another "flash-forward". This marks the second episode so far to have a flash-forward. The first was the season three finale: "Through The Looking Glass".

    • A Hurley-centric episode.

    • The title references Ben's line in the season three finale. He says to Jack, "Making that call is the beginning of the end."
It can also been seen referring to the end of the series. Lost will be 6 seasons long, so after the beginning of season 4 the show has less seasons unaired than aired.

  • Allusions

    • The Beginning of the End is also the title of a movie in 1957, starring Peter Graves, about a swarm of giant grasshoppers that attack Chicago.

    • Star Trek
Sawyer (to Desmond): Easy Scotty, everything's cool.
Referencing the Chief Engineer, Montgomery Scott, on the TV show "Star Trek: The Original Series." Like Desmond the character was also Scottish and nicknamed "Scotty."

    • Abbadon
Otherwise known as the Angel Of The Abyss. Abbadon was also the creature that attempted to destroy Cardiff in the season 1 finale of The Doctor Who spin off show, Torchwood.
