  • Trivia

    • Mr. Friendly: You know, somebody a whole lot smarter than anybody here once said: "Since the dawn of our species man's been blessed with curiosity".

Alvar Hanso, who had ties with the DHARMA Initiative, said this in his 1967 address to the United Nations Security Council.

    • Gabriela & Angelo Busoni have strong American accents when they speak in Italian.

    • Mr. Friendly is using a Luger P08 pistol, which is famed for it's usage by the Nazis during World War II.

    • The numbers:
-Locke estimated that, according to the shifts, he and Jack would've been locked in for 4 hours.
-Jack states that they currently had 11 guns, and that the Others had taken 5 from them already. That makes a total of 16 guns.

    • The X-rays Jack looks at in the flashback show the following date "16 Nov 2005". This is probably a production error.

    • Island events in this episode take place on November 12th and November 13th 2004.

    • Goof: During their journey to find Michael, Sawyer still holds his arm rigid as though in considerable pain (indeed, he still needs bandages and medication). Yet in several long shots of the group, he swings his arms while walking as though in no pain whatsoever.

    • "Alex", who brings Kate to the bearded man, bears the same name as Danielle's daughter, who was kidnapped by the Others 16 years ago. In the Lost podcast, the producers confirm that this is indeed the same person.

  • Quotes

    • Kate: I was just trying to help Jack. When you told me not to go I just - I made a mistake. (Jack ignores her until she stops him by grabbing his arm and forcing him to face her) Hey! Could you just talk to me for a second? I'm sorry.
Jack: (in a sad tone) Yeah. I'm sorry, too.

    • (After Shephard sees Jack with Gabriela)
Shephard: Careful. (Jack looks at him questioningly) There's a line, son. You know it's there and pretending it's not? That would be a mistake.
      Jack: Guess you would know.
Shephard: Maybe okay for some people, Jack, but not for you.

    • Kate: You got a gun for me?
      Jack: You're not coming.
      Kate: Excuse me?
Jack: You're not coming. Someone has to be here to take care of the button.
Kate: So why should that person be me? I can track, carry a gun -
Jack: (forcefully) You're not coming! You're staying. Allright?

    • Sayid: (about the music Charlie and Hurley are listening to) This music is quite depressing.

    • Jack: She kissed me. Yeah, she ... she kissed me and I kissed her back. I ... I don't know ... I don't know how it happened. I made a mistake. I made a mistake and ... and this is my fault. It's my fault that you and me ... I haven't been here, Sarah, I mean ... we don't even talk anymore. I hate what's happening to us and I promise you that things are going to be different. I'm gonna ... I'm gonna work less. I'm gonna be here for you. Okay? I'm going to fix this. We're going to go back to the way things were. I'm going to fix this. I'm going to fix this.
Sarah: Jack. Jack. I'm leaving you.
      Jack: What?
Sarah:(crying) I was already leaving you. That's why my mother was here. She was helping me pack. I've been seeing someone ... someone else. I have to ... I can't stay.
      Jack: Sarah.
Sarah: You ... you will always need something to fix. Goodbye.

    • Jack: Just find the trail, John.
      Locke: I've lost the trail.
Jack: You don't just lose a trail! You just don't want to find him.
Locke: Yeah, that's right, Jack. I've been running in the jungle toward the sound of gunfire because I don't care about Michael.

    • Jack: Shell casings. How many?
      Locke: Three, Michael's.
Sawyer: You boys deaf? I heard at least seven shots. (to Locke) You heard, Daniel Boone, what's your count?

    • Kate: Where is everybody? Jack! John!
Sawyer: Maybe they went out for ice cream.

    • Sawyer: (about changing his bandages) Why can't you do it for me?
Kate: Because I'm not your nurse, and Jack's got the bandages.

    • Locke: (looking around) Are you sure nothing looks familiar?
Sawyer: Oh, look. There's my favorite leaf. How could I ever forget this place?

    • Jack: I don't believe you.
Mr. Friendly: You don't believe what?
Jack: I think you got one guy up there with a gun. I think there's more of us than there are of you. (Points to Locke and Sawyer) I think if you had any real strength, you wouldn't have sent a spy. Ethan.
Mr.Friendly: That's an interesting theory. (shouts) Light'em up!
(Torches light up all around Jack, Locke, and Sawyer)

    • Jack: He's close.
Locke: Yeah, and if he was shooting at someone you want him to come back?
      Sawyer: Personally, hell yeah.

    • Sawyer: Are you sure Mike went this way?
      Locke: Why do you ask?
Sawyer: Oh, I don't know, Mr. Clean, I probably would have gone around Mt. Vesuvius.
Locke: Why'd you pick that name?
Sawyer: Ain't it obvious? All you need's an earring and a mop.
Locke: No, your name. Why'd you pick Sawyer?
Sawyer: What do you mean, pick?
Locke: After the census Hurley gave me the flight manifest. Your name is James, right? James Ford.
      Sawyer: What's it to you?
Locke: Just an interesting name to choose, is all. Who'd you get it from?
Sawyer: Who says I got it from anybody?

    • Kate: (throws a banana at Sawyer) Good morning.
Sawyer: Did you just throw a banana at me?
      Kate: Couldn't find any rocks.
Sawyer: I can think of a better way to get a man up in the morning.

    • Sayid: Where's Jack and Locke?
Hurley: Oh, they went after Michael.
      Sayid: Michael?
Charlie: Yeah, he's run after Walt again. Everyone's gone to bring him back.
      Sayid: Who's everyone?
Hurley: Everyone. Jack, Sawyer, Locke...Oh, and Kate.

    • Michael: Stay in there. Stay...
      Jack: Michael, what are you...?
      Michael: Stay in there, Jack!
      Jack: Hey, whatever's going on...
Michael: Look, I'm going after my son. I'm going after my son, and nobody is going to stop me, okay? Okay, that is my right. That is a father's right.
Jack: There's another way to go about this...
Michael: Get in the damn room!
Jack: You going to shoot me, Michael?!
Michael: No, but I'll shoot your damn computer. That thing is not what you think it is anyway. You don't understand, man. You don't have any idea. Now get in there!
Jack: Michael, listen, we can do this together, okay? I'll come with you.
Michael: No, I have to do it. Now. I have to do it alone.

    • Sawyer: What'd she do to ya?
      Jack: What?
      Sawyer: Kate? What'd she do?
      Jack: She didn't do anything.
Sawyer: Riiiight. You yelling at her cause she wanted to help get Mike back makes a lot of sense.
Jack: Why don't you go back and see if I hurt her feelings?
      Sawyer: Just sayin'.
Jack: Yeah. I know. You love her.
      Sawyer: What you say?

    • Sawyer: (to Kate) If he'd told me to stay behind, I'd done the same damn thing. Don't beat yourself up, Freckles.

    • (Jack is about to help wash the dishes)
      Sarah: You don't have to.
Jack: It's therapeutic, cheaper than a shrink.

    • Charlie: Do you think Claire misses me yet?
Hurley: Man, it's been like a day.

    • Jack: Where's Michael?
Mr. Friendly: Don't worry about Michael, he's not going to find us.

    • Jack: You out here for Michael or is this payback for getting shot?
Sawyer: Why are you out here Doc? You got your reasons, and I got mine.

    • Jack: Is he still heading north?
      Locke: Yes.
Jack: Do you think he's lost?
Locke: No. Trail's as straight as the interstate.

    • Jack: What are you doing?
      Sawyer: I'm coming with ya.
      Jack: You're still on antibiotics.
Sawyer: Well, it's a good thing I'm travellin' with my doctor then.

    • Sawyer: This place still creeps me out.
Kate: You'll get used to it.

    • Locke: No one is coming down here.
Jack: We better hope Sawyer shows up for his band-aid change.

    • Jack: Is it true that you killed one of them?
      Ana Lucia: One of who?
Jack: Them. (Ana Lucia nods head) Sayid tells me that you're a cop.
Ana Lucia: I was a cop.
Jack: Can I ask you something?
      Ana Lucia: Shoot.
Jack: How long do you think it would take to train an army?

    • Jin: Michael is my friend.
      Sun: I am your wife.

    • Jack: Look, you said you wanted to talk. So talk.
Mr. Friendly: Let me ask you something. How long have you been here on the island?
      Jack: 50 days.
Mr. Friendly: Oooh, 50 days. That's what, almost 2 months, huh? Tell me, you go over a man's house for the first time, do you take off your shoes? Do you put your feet up on his coffee table? Do you walk in the kitchen, eat food that doesn't belong to you? (he looks at Locke) Open the door to rooms you got no business opening? You know, somebody a whole lot smarter than anybody here once said: "Since the dawn of our species man's been blessed with curiosity". You know the other one about curiosity, don't you, Jack? This is not your island. This is our island. And the only reason you're living on it is because we let you live on it.

    • Hurley: (to Charlie) Libby's kinda cute--in a 'I've been terrorized by the Others for 40 days' kind of way.

    • Locke: (to Jack) Who are we to tell anyone what they can or can't do?

  • Notes

  • Allusions

    • When Jack, Locke and Sawyer hear the gunfight ahead of them and then find the shell casings left behind, they find only three, yet claim to have heard seven shots fired. This is likely to be a reference to the Warren Commission of the John F. Kennedy assassination, which concluded that three shots were fired, and three shells were found in the Book Depository, even though more are audible of video evidence of the event.

    • Daniel Boone: Sawyer calls Locke "Daniel Boone", after the American pioneer and hunter whose frontier exploits made him one of the first folk heroes of the United States.

    • Mr. Friendly: You know the other one about curiosity.
He is referring to the saying, "Curiosity killed the cat." (The other part of this saying is, "Satisfaction brought him back.")

    • Sawyer referred to Mr. Friendly as "Zeke." Most likely the Zeke reference was to the book of Ezekiel in the Bible, about a prophet in exile. The allusion is that as Ezekiel spoke for his people, Mr. Friendly spoke for the Others. Or maybe he's just referring to Mr. Friendly as "Zeke" because it is one of the stereotypical names for "redneck" characters. Mr. Friendly and the others seem to be "mountain men" like the ones from Deliverance.

    • Hurley: He went all Commando.
This is in reference to the 1985 Arnold Schwarzenegger movie where he played a one man fighting machine against an army.

    • When climbing a hill, Sawyer compares it to climbing Mount Vesuvius. Mount Vesuvius is an active volcano, east of Naples, Italy. The volcano is known for its destruction of Pompeii and Herculaneum in 79 A.D.

    • Episode title: The Hunting Party

The title of this episode is a reference to the 1971 western movie about a man who kills out of revenge for his wife's abduction.

    • Mr. Clean: Sawyer called Locke Mr. Clean, a popular cleaning brand. Mr. Clean is a man who resembles Locke, since they both have no hair.
