Season 1 Episode 7

The Moth

Aired Sunday 9:00 PM Nov 03, 2004 on ABC

  • Trivia

    • When Jack and Charlie are in the cave Charlie sees a moth go to the top. If a moth heads to light it would have gone to the flashlight not the top of the cave.

    • The method Sayid refers to (Triangulating) actually just requires two sensor locations instead of three.

    • Numbers: 4

Michael says he needs 4 people working at a time to try and dig up the rocks.

    • Numbers: 8

Charlie will be on tour for 8 weeks.

    • Numbers: 8

Kate mentions that they crashed 8 days ago. Michael has 8 years of construction experience.

    • Island events in this episode take place on September 29th 2004.

    • Goof: When Kate reaches the caves to help Jack get out she asks Michael if Jack is alive and before he answers you can see a red ladder behind her.

    • When Charlie and his brother are arguing backstage, as his brother rushes out shouting "P*ss off," you can see a crew member move in the mirror on the left and the right side. If you watch closely you can see the producers tried blurring the mirrors, but still they weren't able to remove the crew member.

    • It is not likely for a person to get fireworks in Australia unless they have a special permit. Therefore Australia is a strange place to try and smuggle them from especially when the United States borders places like Mexico.

    • When Sayid lights the flare, it is in considerably tall grass. Wouldn't the grass catch on fire?

    • In response to Boone asking his sister: When they first heard the message in French, they told each other that they couldn't tell anyone else. So since they were making the transceiver because of this message, he couldn't have asked anyone who didn't know about it.

    • During the episode wrap-up, when Charlie and Jack are sitting at the campfire, you can clearly see Jack leaning back, resting his weight on his injured right arm & shoulder. A minute later, Kate brings him a sling.

    • When Charlie and Jack are trapped in the cave, they are both very sweaty and dirty. However when they emerge from the cave they are much cleaner and not sweaty at all.

  • Quotes

    • Hurley: (while helping Jack move luggage) Dude, what's in these things, cinder blocks?

    • Jack: Call me a broken record, but caves are a natural shelter, and a hell of a lot safer than living here on the beach.
      Kate: You're mad at me.
Jack: No, Kate, I'm -- I just don't understand why you won't come with me -- us. It's maybe a mile up there, if that.
Kate: We crashed eight days ago, Jack. I'm not setting up house here.

    • Charlie: Where's Kate, we have to tell Kate about Jack?
Sawyer: Sorry sport, you just missed her. Her and Muhammad headed into the woods about ten minutes ago.
      Charlie: Which way?
Sawyer: Don't sweat it amigo, I know which way they went.
      Charlie: Yeah, but ...
Sawyer: I'll tell her. You just keep doing whatever it is you do around here.

    • Charlie: I dunno what happened, we were just talking and it all came down on us. It all happened so fast.
Hurley: Dude, we got to get help. Charlie, go down to the beach and get help.
      Charlie: Okay, I'm on it.
Hurley: And make sure you tell Kate.

    • Charlie: (angry at Liam) Soundcheck. You missed soundcheck. You don't show up for rehearsal. We've got a show in an hour!
Liam: Oh! A show. I like shows.

    • Kate: You've been hoarding like a packrat since the crash, and you don't have a single laptop?
Sawyer: We are testy. Still upset about your little breakup? You and Jacko?
      Kate: It must be exhausting.
      Sawyer: What's that?
      Kate: Living like a parasite.

    • Kate: (to Sawyer) I get it now. You don't want off this island, because there is nothing for you to go back for. Nobody you miss. And no one misses you.

    • Charlie: If thing get too crazy, no matter what, If I say we're done, we walk away.
      Liam: We walk away.

    • Sayid: The battery in the transceiver is dead. Without the transceiver, all of this is for nothing. Something from the laptop computer would probably work, but I've been not able to find anything.
Kate: I think I know where to look.

    • Sawyer: Hey.
Kate: What the hell are you doing here?
Sawyer: Easy. I just came to tell you somethin'.
Kate: What makes you think I'm interested in anything that you would have to say?
Sawyer: I just came to tell you that you were right about me. I don't help anyone but myself. Here I am, I came to pitch in.
Kate: You're here to help? (Sayid and Kate walk away) Hey, don't act any more surprised, I might get offended.

    • Jack: I wish I shared your faith, Kate.
Sawyer (walking up): I wouldn't mind sharing a few things with her myself.
Kate: What do you want Sawyer?
Sawyer: I heard the doctor here is vacatin' the premises, so I'd thought it'd be best to claims my new digs. (drops his bags) I could fix this place up real good. I might even find someone to share it with.
Jack (to Kate): I'll talk to you later.

    • Walt: We should get Mister Locke.
Hurley: Locke's out in the jungle killing stuff.

    • Sayid: (looking at Sawyer) I don't trust him.
      Kate: Who does?
Sayid: I don't trust him with you.
      Kate: I can handle him.

    • (Kate is looking at her watch)
Sawyer: Still ain't five, just like the last time you checked your watch.
Kate: I just don't want to miss Sayid's signal. Remember, I'll fire the flare, you set off the antenna.
Sawyer: I just thank the good Lord I got you here to keep reminding me.
Kate: It's a dirty job, but somebody's gotta do it.
Sawyer: So what is it about that guy...Jack? What is it about him that makes you all...weak in the loins?
Kate: You try to be a pig, or does it just come naturally?
Sawyer: Say he's a doctor right...yeah the ladies dig the doctors. Hell, give me a couple of bandaids, a bottle of peroxide, I could run this island too.
Kate: (as if in disbelief) You're actually comparing yourself to Jack?
Sawyer: The difference between us ain't that big, sweetheart. But I guarantee you if he woulda survived a few more weeks on this island you woulda figured that out.
Kate: What did you just say?
Sawyer: Ah, damn, didn't I tell you? Word in the valley is saint Jack got himself buried in a cave in.
      Kate: What?!
Sawyer: Look at the brightside, now you have someone else to pity.

    • Jack: (to Kate) I want off this island too, but we both know that's not going to happen any time soon.

    • Jack: Want to help me grab the rest of those bags?
      Hurley: Oh, could I?

    • Charlie: You don't know me! I'm a bloody rock god!

    • Charlie: Bless me father, for I have sinned.. It's been a week since my last confession...
      Father: Go ahead, my son
Charlie: Last night I had physical relations.. with a girl who I didn't know
      Father: I see, anything else?
Charlie: Yea, right after that I had.. relations with another girl. Then straight after that, I watched while they had relations with each other.

    • (a small hole is made in the rocks)
      Charlie: I'll do it.
      Hurley: Charlie?
Michael: No, man. Look you're still too shook up, I might be able to squeeze through.
Charlie: Wait. Who's gonna take care of your son if somethings happen? (points to Sun) She's got a husband. (points to Boone) He's got a sister. I'm alone here, no one on the island. Let me do this.

    • (Sayid hands Sawyer the antenna)
Sayid: Attach this antenna up in that tree as high as you can.
      Sawyer: Golly! Thanks boss.

    • Kate: What are we doing chasing some phantom distress signal, what are the odds of this working?
Sayid: No worse than the odds of us surviving that plane crash.
Kate: People survive plane crashes all the time.
Sayid: Not like this one. The tail section broke off while we were still in the air. Our section cart wheeled through the jungle and yet we escaped with nothing but a few scrapes. How do you explain that?
      Kate: Blind, dumb luck?
      Sayid: No one's that lucky.

    • Jack: I just don't understand why you won't come with me, us? It's maybe a mile up there, if that,
Kate: We crashed eight days ago Jack, I'm not setting up house here.

    • Locke: Nice work Charlie. You make excellent bait.
Charlie: I'm glad I could oblige. Now give me my bloody drugs.

    • Walt: This place is cool ... can we live here?

    • Charlie: (Coughs amidst the dust. He crawls over to Jack) I'm, uh. . . I'm here to rescue you.

    • (trapped in a cave)
Charlie: You're thinking I'm useless and a junkie to boot.
Jack: You're not useless. That took a lot of guts getting in here and trying to rescue me. I won't forget that.
Charlie: For the rest of our lives?
Jack: At the rate we're using our oxygen in here, that won't be long.
Charlie: This place-it reminds me of confession. This little claustrophobic booth.
Jack: I wouldn't have taken you for a religious man.
Charlie: I used to be. Hey, you want to hear my confession? It might take a while.
Jack: Hey, I'm no Saint, either.

    • Charlie: Give them to me.
Locke: This is the third time, are you sure you really want it?
      Charlie: I've made my choice.
(Locke hands him the heroin and Charlie throws it into the fire)

    • Locke: What do you suppose is in that cocoon, Charlie?
      Charlie: I don't know, a-a butterfly, I guess?
Locke: No, it's much more beautiful than that. That's a moth cocoon. It's ironic butterflies get all the attention, but moths spin silk. They're stronger, they're faster--
      Charlie: That's wonderful, but...
Locke (pointing at the cocoon): You see this little hole? This moth's just about to emerge. It's in there right now, struggling, it's digging its way through the thick hide of the cocoon. Now, I could help it: take my knife, gently widen the opening, and the moth would be free. But it would be too weak to survive. Struggle is nature's way of strengthening it.

    • Kate: (Jack is looking at her mugshot) You know, I take better pictures than that, smaller, too. If you want some for your wallet.

    • Boone: How are we going to be able to tell that we're actually in the right position? We have no way to communicate with each other?
      (Sayid grabs a bottle rocket)
      Kate: Bottle rockets?
Sayid: Thank God for fireworks smugglers.

    • Liam: I'm just trying to look out for you.
Charlie: You never looked out for me! Now if you don't mind, I've got a plane to catch.

    • In the commentary to this episode, Dominic Monaghan says that when Locke gives him back the drugs at the end of the episode and Charlie is holding the drugs in his hand looking intently, Monaghan was picturing himself as Gollum with the Ring in The Lord of the Rings movies.

  • Allusions

    • Title: The Moth

"The Moth" is a song by Aimee Mann from her 2002 album, Lost in Space.

It was also the original title of Tennessee William's play 'A Streetcar Named Desire' and comparisons can be drawn between the play and the episode.

    • Liam: And the meek shall inherit the Earth.

Is a passage from the New Testament, Matthew chapter five, verse five.

    • Charlie's Band: Driveshaft
Driveshaft seems to be a light spoof on the British band Oasis. Oasis is a band made up of two brothers. Charlie is a lot like Noel, who writes all the music and lyrics and cares deeply about his music, whereas his older brother, Liam (who has the same name as the older brother in Oasis) merely sings them. The band has broken up and gotten back together many times due to bitter feuds between the brothers. They have reconciled in recent years and are making their first major album in over eight years. Driveshaft's song 'You All Everybody' even has a guitar riff that sounds suspiciously like Oasis' 'Rock 'n' Roll Star.
