Season 4 Episode 14

There's No Place Like Home (3)

Aired Sunday 9:00 PM May 29, 2008 on ABC

  • Trivia

    • As the Oceanic 6 arrive on Sumba, the blocking and set dressing of Sumba's shore is similar to Elliott's second flashback from Lost: Via Domus.

    • The logo of the Hoffs/Drawlar Funeral Parlor includes a black orb, just like the Pearl Station, except that was white.

    • Since it wasn't physically possible to land the helicopter on the freighter (the blades would hit the ship) the production team worked very hard to make it look as realistic as possible without actually showing it landing. To create this illusion, they added a shadow of the helicopter on the surface of the freighter when Desmond is shouting at it. The shadow shows the helicopter perpendicular to the freighter, when in the next shot it is parallel (the natural way to land).

    • After the island is "moved", the only people left are Desmond, Lapidus and the Oceanic 6, which are 8 people. 8 is one of "The Numbers".

    • With this episode; Ben is the only non - Oceanic 6 person to have a flashforward.

    • When Penny's boat approaches the Lostie's raft, we can hear a man shouting in Portuguese:

"É uma jangada cheia de gente. São oito deles."

It can be translated to "It's a raft full of people. There's eight of them".

    • The helicopter in which the Oceanic Six are flying bears the number 842 on its side 8 and 42 are two of The Numbers.

    • After Ben fails to turn the wheel with his hands he uses the crow bar as leverage. During this event the scenes changes from one angle to another. When the scenes changes you can see that the crow bar is facing his face at the first scenes and on the other scene the crow bar is facing the wheel.

    • Current events take place on December 30, 2004, and, on January 5th, 2005. These are the 100th and 108th days for the survivors.

    • In the scene where the C4 detonator is activated, the light turns red. Soon after, the camera shows the gauge on the nitrogen tank, and then cuts to Jin. While showing him, the light is green again. When it cuts away and shows Michael spraying the battery, the light has turned back to red.

    • Ben is in the same condition (Orchid parka and cut arm) as he was when we saw him in "The Shape of Things To Come" appearing in the Tunisian desert. The hotel desk clerk tells Ben it's Oct 24th, 2005 even though it was almost ten full months earlier on the Island, when he pushed the Frozen Donkey Wheel.

    • During Jack's visit to "Jeremy Bentham", the Pixies' song, "Gouge Away", is playing in the car.

    • This episode follows the trend of former season finales in that a major subject throughout the season is blown up or destroyed during it. Whereas Season 1, Season 2, and Season 3 featured the Hatch, Swan station, and the Others respectively, this concerned the freighter, Kahana.

    • When Ben descended into the "Donkey wheel Room" we can see tiny little wisps of CGI condensation escape his mouth. In a room where everything is frozen nearly rock solid, the condensation of his breath should be MUCH more pronounced than it was.

    • When Ben enters the cold wheelchamber crushing the glass, he steps down the stairs that break. When falling down and hitting the ground the crowbar falls away from him over an meter. Next sequence the crowbar lies between his legs.

    • When Sawyer whispers something into Kate's ear right before he jumps out of the helicopter, he says "I have a daughter in Albuquerque. You need to find her. Tell her I'm sorry".

    • When Desmond is pulled into the life-raft he is barefoot. As he steps aboard the ship he has sneakers on.

    • When Sayid takes Hurley out of the hospital, Hurley is playing chess. Another reference to the "Black And White" theme.

    • The strange phone call Kate gets in her dream with someone talking backwards translates as "The island needs you. You have to get back before it's too late".

    • The two men in Penny's boat speak Portuguese, and here is an English version of what they say:

Man 1: Look at this! Hurry! Get some blankets. And the first aid kit. Bring it all here now.
Man 2: There is a raft with people, Mrs. Widmore.
Man 1: Mrs. Widmore, come down to the deck.

    • The Numbers: Sayid kills a man at 8:15 outside Santa Rosa Mental Hospital. 815 is also the flight that the Losties were on.

    • During the airing of this episode, a commercial for "Octagon Global Recruiting" aired. This organization is looking for applicants for the DHARMA Initiative. Their recruitment drive begins in San Diego on July 24th - 27th, 2008. This is the same date as ComicCon '08.

    • Penelope's boat is named "Searcher".

  • Quotes

    • Jack: Why are you here?
Ben: I'm here to tell you that the island won't let you come alone. All of you have to go back.
Jack: Are you...Sayid, I don't even know where Sayid is. Hurley...is insane. Sun blames me for...(looks agonized) And Kate...she won't even talk to me anymore.
Ben: Perhaps I can help you with that. This is the way it has to be, Jack. It's the only way. You have to do it together, all of you.
      Jack: How?
Ben: I have a few ideas. (Jack turns to leave) Jack. I said all of you. We're gonna have to bring him too. (Jack turns to look into the open coffin. We see Lockes body in the coffin)

    • Ben: Hello, Jack. (Jack is startled and moves away from the coffin) Sorry. Didn't mean to scare you. (Pause) Did he tell you I was off the island?
      Jack: Yes he did.
Ben: When did you speak to him?
      Jack: About a month ago
      Ben: And Kate?
Jack: Yeah. Yeah, he came to see her too.
Ben: And what did he say to you?
Jack: He told me... that after I left the island... some very bad things happened. And he told me that it was my fault. I belive him. And he said I had to come back.
Ben: Yes, Ive heard you've been flying around in passenger planes. Hoping that you'd crash. It's dark, Jack. Very dark.

    • Keamy: Wherever you go... Widmore, he'll find you.
Ben: Not if I find him first.

    • Ben: I hope you're happy now, Jacob.

    • Hurley: Checkmate, Mr. Eko.

    • Hurley: I can't believe he did it.
      Kate: Who did what?
Hurley: Locke. He moved the island.
      Jack: No, he didn't.
Hurley: Oh really? 'Cause one minute it was there and the next it was gone so... unless we like overlooked it, dude, that's exactly what he did. But if you've got another explanation, man, I'd love to hear it.

    • Claire: Don't bring him back, Kate. Don't you dare bring him back!

    • Ben: Good-bye, John. I'm sorry I made your life so miserable.

    • (Ben puts on a parka)
      Locke: What's that for?
      Ben: I'm going somewhere cold.
      Locke: Then where's mine?
Ben: You don't need one, because you're not going with me.
Locke: Yes, I am going with you.
      Ben: No, John, you're not.
Locke: Jacob told me what we had to do. You don't get to make all the decisions-
Ben: He told you what to do, but he didn't tell you how. Because he wants me to suffer the consequences.
      Locke: What consequences?
Ben: Whoever moves the island can never come back.

    • Sawyer: Is that our boat?
      Juliet: It was.

    • Locke: Was he talking about what I think he was talking about?
Ben: If you mean time travelling bunnies, then yes.

    • Jack: It's been a pleasure, Frank, I hope we never see each other again.
      Frank: Roger that, Doc

    • Jack: I'll see you in another life, brother.
Desmond: Aye, I guess you will.

    • Jack: We're going to have to lie.

    • Locke: I asked you a question!
Ben: If I were you I would duck.

    • Michael: Who are you?
Christian: You can go now, Michael.
      (The freighter explodes)

  • Notes

  • Allusions

    • Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty: Michael using liquid nitrogen to cool the C4 battery is reminiscent of a sequence in the video game, where the protagonist must work against the clock to freeze a number of C4 bombs planted aboard an offshore oil refinery.
