Season 3 Episode 23

Through the Looking Glass (2)

Aired Sunday 9:00 PM May 23, 2007 on ABC

  • Trivia

    • Numbers: The Others who are guarding Jin, Sayid and Bernard are said to have 4 guns when Juliet is talking to Sawyer.

    • If the events on the Island are in fact taking place on Dec. 21 and 22, then that would be the Losties 91st and 92nd days on the Island.

    • When the compartment floods, after Charlie seals the door, it would not fill all the way to the top with water, thus assuring Charlie's death. Briefly, the entire Looking Glass station is pressurized, as is the chamber where Charlie is. The water would flood no higher than the top of the porthole, due to the downward pressure of the air upon the rising water. The air pocket would provide a few minutes of air for Charlie to catch a breath and try to swim out.

    • As of this episode, Hurley joins the long list of characters on the show who have intentionally killed someone.

    • Sayid had never killed anyone on the island until this episode.

    • The doctor who Jack speaks to mentions a Dr. Nadler.
      Nadler is Bernard's last name.

    • Goof: It is not actually possible for radio waves to interfere with satellite waves.

    • The real Los Angeles Times newspaper has a story about a marijuana bust instead of the in-show obituary announcement.

    • Desmond is in a hatch at the end of all three season finales.

    • The knife that Locke uses to stab Naomi appears to be a SOG Navy Seal Knife, or a SOG Seal Pup.

    • Jack's license plate is 2SAQ321.
      Kate's phone number is 310-555-0148.

    • The fact no one's at one of the survivors' funeral in Jack's "Flash forward" may be the fulfilment of Jack's "Live together, die alone" speech.

    • Jack's newspaper was an issue of the L.A. Times April 5, 2007.

    • Goof: In the scene where Charlie is drowning, the message in his hand changes between shots. The first time we see his hand, the writing is more blurred, yet the second time, the letters are far more clear. There's also clearly a different type of handwriting in each shot.

    • If you look closely where Mikhail's missing eye used to be, you can see his eye move under the makeup scar.

    • The second time we see Ben's map, the red lines and the cross he drew earlier are slightly different.

    • Numbers:
-The keys Charlie types in are numbered 1 to 16 and in a 4 by 4 pattern.
      -The code that Charlie uses to deactivate the jamming equipment is 5 4 5 8 7 7 5 5 4 3 7 7 6 1 1 3. If you sum those numbers, you'll get 78. 7+8=15.
-Jack has 8 stitches in his forehead.
-The obituary states that the person in question died at 4 am.
-15 people die in the two parts of the episode, the most character deaths so far: 10 Others at the beach camp, Charlie, Mikhail, Bonnie and Greta in The Looking Glass, and, Naomi at the radio tower. Also, if you count the person from the funeral Jack attended, that's 16.

    • The phone Jack uses in the episode is a Motorola KRZR, this was released in late 2006.

    • When Charlie is about to drown in the looking glass he makes the sign of the cross. However he does it incorrectly. He touches the correct parts in the correct order, but he does make a fatal error; he uses his left hand instead of his right. This could have been done intentionally sense he has stated many times that he is not a religous person,he could have not known that you have to use a certain hand.

    • The name of the funeral parlor Jack goes to is "Hoffs/Drawlar", an anagram for "flash forward".

  • Quotes

    • Jack: He didn't mean it, you know.
      Kate: What?
Jack: Sawyer. When he said he didn't want you to go with him, he didn't mean it.
Kate: If he didn't mean it why did he say it?
Jack: He was trying to protect you. That's why I asked you not to come back for me.
Kate: Why are you sticking up for Sawyer? He'd never do it for you.
      Jack: Because I love you.

    • Ben: May I have my walkie back?
      Jack: What?
Ben: There's something you need to hear. Please?
      (Jack hands Ben the walkie-talkie)
Ben: Thank you. Tom are you there?
Tom: (over the walkie) Yeah, I'm here.
Ben: (To Jack) Your plan killed seven of my people. But the ones that you failed to kill are now holding you friends, Jin, Sayid, Bernard, at gun point.
Jack: And what's to stop me from snapping your neck?
Ben: Tom, unless you hear my voice in one minute, shoot all three of them.
      Tom: Got it.
Ben: (pulls out his watch) Bring me the phone, Jack. (struggling is heard over the walkie) 40 seconds.
Jack: No, I'm getting them off the island. All of them!
Ben: Let me ask you something, Jack. Why do you want to leave the island? What is it that you so desperately want to get back to? You have no one, your father's dead, your wife left you; moved on with another man. Can you just not wait to get back to the hospital? Get back to fixing things? (Jack moves forward) It's 20 seconds now, just get me the phone Jack.
      Jack: No.
Ben: 10 seconds, bring me the phone.
      Jack: No.
      Ben: I'm not bluffing.
      Jack: I won't.
      Ben: 5
      Jack: do it!
      Ben: 4, 3
      Jack: No!
(3 gun shots are heard over the walkie)
      Ben: I'm so sorry Jack.
(Jack attacks Ben and beats him, he then picks up the walkie-talkie)
      Jack: Tom, are you there?
Tom: Yeah Jack, I hear you.
Jack: Im gonna' lead my people up the radio tower and I'm gonna make a call. And I'm gonna' get 'em all rescued, every one of them! And then I'm going to come and find you, and I'm gonna' kill ya.

    • Jack: Every Friday night I, I fly from LA to Tokyo or, Singapore, Sydney. And then I, I get off and I, have a drink, and then I fly home.
      Kate: Why?
Jack: Because I wanted to crash, Kate. I don't care about anybody else on board. Every little bump we hit or turbulence, I mean I, I actually close my eyes and I pray that I can get back.
(Kate looks near tears as does Jack)
Kate: This is not gonna change.
Jack: No I'm sick of lying. We made a mistake.
Kate: I have to go. He's gonna be wondering where I am...
Jack: We were not supposed to leave.
      Kate: Yes we were.

    • Jack: Hey, stay where you are, we're almost up to the tower. You'll be safer there.
Hurley: Yeah I got ya, we'll stay put until you like, phone home.

    • Kate: It's gonna work! It's happening, we're gonna get off of this island!
Jack: We'll celebrate when we're home.

    • Ben: Jack! I know you think you're saving your people. But you need to stop this. It's a mistake.
Jack: The mistake was listening to you.
Ben: This'll be your last chance, Jack. I'm telling you, making that call is the beginning of the end.
Naomi: I've got it, I've got a signal!!!
Ben: Jack please, you don't know what you're doing!
Jack: I know exactly what I'm doing.

    • Claire: Sshh. hey Aaron, it's OK, sweetie.
      Naomi: What's the matter?
      Claire: I don't know, I think he's just a bit scared.
      Naomi: Hard to blame him.

    • Mikhail: Where is the other one?
      Bonnie: What?
Mikhail: This idiot swam down from a boat. I was just shooting at his friend. He dove down here.
      Bonnie: He's alone.
Mikhail: Are you sure about that?

    • Ryan: It was an order, Tom, we had to follow it.
Tom: Ben doesn't know what the hell he's talking about. He's lost it. I mean look at us. Instead of putting three bullets in the damn sand, we should have killed them for real.

    • Kate: You look terrible.
      Jack: Thanks.
Kate: Why did you call me, Jack?
Jack: (he hands her the newspaper clipping.) I thought maybe you'd heard. I thought maybe you'd go to the funeral.
Kate: Why would I go to the funeral?

    • Kate: Saw you on the news. Still pulling people out of burning wreckage, huh?
      Jack: Old habits.

    • Locke: Please, put the phone down.
Jack: No, you're done keeping me on this island!
Locke: I will kill you if I have to.
      Jack: Then do it, John.

    • Naomi: What's your boyfriend's name? The rock star who swam down to the station?
      Claire: Charlie.
Naomi: Charlie just got us rescued.

    • Kate: What happened?
Jack: He killed them. Bernard, Jin, Sayid, all three of them. He radioed the beach and I let it happen -- I had to let it happen. We can't tell Rose or Sun, not yet. We've got to keep moving. I promised Sayid we'd keep moving.
Kate: Why did you bring him back? Why didn't you just kill him?
Jack: Because I want him to see it. I want him to experience the moment we get off this island and I want him to know that he failed. And then I'll kill him.

    • Charlie: OK, Bonnie, we're both going to die down here, so let's be perfectly honest. That one-eyed maniac just killed your friend and shot you in the back. It would appear your glorious leader Ben put him up to it. Are you a sodding idiot? You have the opportunity to make Ben very, very angry. Why would you not take that?

    • Sawyer: (to Hurley) Stay in the bus, Hero.

    • Hurley: (Over walkie) Attention Others, Come in Others. If you're listening to this I want you to know that we got you bastards, and unless the rest of you want to be blown up, you best stay away from our beach.

    • Ben: (About Naomi) Jack. She's one of the bad guys.
Jack: (sarcastically) Oh, I almost forgot. You're the... you're the good guys.

    • Ben:(To Naomi) Hi, I'm Benjamin. I don't believe we've had the pleasure...
Jack:(Pointing to Naomi) Don't talk to him!

    • Tom: Okay. I give up.
(Sawyer shoots him in the chest)
Sawyer: That's for taking the kid off the raft.
Hurley: Dude, it was over. He surrendered.
      Sawyer: I didn't believe him.

    • Kate: Why are you sticking up for Sawyer? He'd never do it for you.
      Jack: Because I love you.

    • Jack: We were not supposed to leave.
Kate: Yes, we were. (Pause) Goodbye Jack.
Jack: We have to go back, Kate. (Kate looks at him, but goes away) We have to go back!

    • Jack: Bernard and Jin and Sayid... they're with you?
Hurley: Yeah, dude, I told you. I saved them all!

    • Alex: (To Rousseau, who stares at her) What?
Ben: Alex... this is your mother.

    • Dr. Hamill: How much have you had to drink today, Jack?
Jack: (wabbling) Okay, tell you what, you do this. You get my father down here. Get him down here right now. And if I'm drunker than he is, you can fire me!

This episode was nominated for a 2008 Golden Reel Award for "Best Sound Editing in Television: Long Form – Sound Effects and Foley" and for "Best Sound Editing in Television: Long Form – Dialogue and Automated Dialogue Replacement".

    • Unlike the previous two season finales ("Exodus, Part 2" and "Live Together, Die Alone"), this episode wasn't shown in two parts on the United Kingdom and Australian airing.

    • - Not only two 'Las Vegas' stars rejoin in this episode. Also Tracy Middendorf & Josh Holloway both appear in this episode (although not together) and in the pilot episode of 'Angel'. Also in this episode they do not meet.

      - This marks the fifth appearance of an Angel actor in Lost after Josh Holloway (Sawyer), Daniel Dae Kim (Jin), Sam Anderson (Bernard) and Bai Ling (Achara). Also David Fury writes for both shows.

    • The surprise ending of this episode was referred to by the writers of the episode as "The Snake in the Mailbox" and the lines for that scene were only given to the actors who were in it (Matthew Fox and Evangeline Lilly). The rest of the cast did not know about the ending until it was aired.

    • Former "Las Vegas" cast member Marsha Thomason, having appeared in the previous 5 episodes, is joined by fellow L. V. cast member James Lesure in guest shots in this episode.

    • A Jack-centric episode.

  • Allusions

    • Fight Club: In the film the Narrator says, "Everytime the plane banked too sharply on takeoff or landing, I prayed for a crash or a midair collision." This mirrors what Jack says to Kate outside the airport at the end of the episode.

    • "Scentless Apprentice": Jack is listening to this Nirvana song on the way to the funeral home. Nirvana singer/songwriter Kurt Cobain died on April 5th, the date Jack's newspaper was published.

    • Myst:
The 'unlocking' of the Looking Glass keyboard is very similar to one of the levels from the computer game Myst, where the player must recreate a tune on a keyboard inside a station on the island in order to unlock a secret world.

    • Alias
The end of this episode is quite similar to the end of another season finale of a JJ Abrams show. Alias season 1 ended with two main characters on either side of a small glass window, with one side filling with water. Desmond (just like Sydney in Alias) tries to free Charlie (Vaughn) by smashing a fire extinguisher against the glass window. However, just like in Alias, he fails.

    • E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial:
Hurley mentions that Jack is going to use the satellite phone to "phone home."

    • The Goonies:
On this 1985 movie hit, Kerri Green's character, Andrea "Andy" Carmichael, also has to play a tune on a keyboard (organ of bones) in order to pursue her group's objectives and save the day, much like Charlie did inside the Looking Glass.

    • The newspaper Jack is reading in the initial scene is dated April 5th, later in another Flash Forward, Jack is listening to Nirvana in his car.
Kurt Cobain of Nirvana died on April 5th, perhaps Jack was listening to the radio and the station was playing the track in memory of his death?

    • The Beach Boys Good Vibrations

The code for the key pad played part of the song "Good Vibrations", which is a popular song by the Beach Boys.
