Lou: You can talk about Barney.
Mrs. Pynchon: No, I can't. It's embarrassing being in mourning for a dog. We are after all newspaper people. We have to deal constantly with human tragedy on such a large scale.
This is the second appearance of Geoffrey Lewis on Lou Grant. He played a sheriff in Henhouse, episode four of the first season. Pat Corley, a dog fight organizer in this episode, played the judge a few episodes before in Andrew, Part Two.
The cartoonist in this episode is probably based on Gary Trudeau of Doonesbury. His name gives it away. Diefenbaker was - like Trudeau- a former Canadian Prime Minister.
