Episode Summary

The Music Box
To Nicholas' dismay, Effie invites Finn up to their place for cocktails in an effort to get to know her daughter's boyfriend's father better. It's an evening that's uncomfortable for everybody. In reciprocation, Finn then invites the Conklins down to his place for drinks, which Nicholas grudgingly agrees to. Effie begs Nicholas to try to give Finn a chance, but her words fall on deaf ears after Nicholas discovers his long-lost music box amidst Finn's collection of junk. Nicholas accuses Finn of stealing it, and, despite Effie's protests, the two are soon at war.moreless

    • As a footnote, all the other CBS shows mentioned here were cancelled by the end of 2000.

    • With falling ratings (the show took a Nielsen bullet in the head when Providence returned after two weeks of baseball preemptions), CBS knocked the series off their schedule the Monday after this episode was broadcast, and put midseason replacement Candid Camera back into the time slot it had held the previous season. CBS promised it would be relaunched in January, 2000, probably on Wednesday nights following Cosby -- as the show that was following Cosby, Work With Me, had already been abruptly cancelled. This was not to happen, however, as they instead premiered Steven Bochco's City of Angels in that Wednesday vacancy, while Cosby was shuffled over to Friday nights where Love & Money and Candid Camera had both aired. Then they set Love & Money's return date for March. The month they were busy pushing Grapevine and Falcone. Despite continuing to promise on that Love & Money was only on hiatus, and they're not like other networks who say a show is only on hiatus when it's really been cancelled and da da da da, CBS proved to be exactly like other networks -- and even more full of crap. By the time the series finally did resurface, CBS had announced their fall 2000 lineup, Love & Money wasn't on it, Paget Brewster already moved on to another series, and the return to the schedule in July was ushered in without any fanfare or promotion. (Not that there was much of either in the first place.) Apparently expecting decent viewership without even acknowledging the show's existence, CBS burned off all of two unaired episodes -- to microscopic ratings -- before quietly dropping it for good. But that's the broadcast networks for you. All money. No love.

    • Derek Basco appears as an extra.

    • The song the music box plays is "Fun, Fun, Fun" by the Beach Boys.
