This Wee Superstar Steals Hearts as Easily as...Well, Never Mind
Okay, sure, Winona Ryder has a well-publicized rep for sticky fingers, but she's also something of a master thief of hearts. After all, the Hollywood A-lister has shopped for love among big-screen beaus and Billboard's Heatseekers alike.
So, whom has Winona loved the longest? Find out on Love Chain: Winona Ryder.
Marquee heartthrob Johnny Depp first made Ryder's heart go pitter-patter when they shared the screen as lovebirds in Tim Burton's romantically tragic Edward Scissorhands. Ryder's performance was marked most notably by the long blonde wig she inexplicably sported. (The hairpiece was notable because the pixie star is a natural blonde, but for Lucas, she went black and never went back--or so they say.) Depp and Ryder dated for just over three years, and he marked their engagement by tattooing "Winona Forever" on his arm. But they didn't make forever, exactly, and his tattoo now famously reads "Wino Forever." Which brings up an important Love Chain rule: Never get a tat in honor of your beloved; you'll just jinx it. After going off the Depp end, Ryder began seeing Soul Asylum's David Pirner, which caused a ripple in the indie-rock scene, because his bandmates and buddies thought the grunge rocker had gone soft. Many accused the movie star of trying to make Pirner over in her Hollywood image--all because she got him to wear a tuxedo to the Academy Awards, just to see her lose the Best Supporting Oscar (The Age of Innocence). But the pressures of being a rock princess took their toll, so Ryder went back to her Hollywood roots.
While Winona's buddy Gwyneth Paltrow dated Ben Affleck, Ryder began a romance with Ben's buddy Matt Damon, and for a time, the foursome was a fixture out on the town. Winona and Damon made it for three years of cigarettes and taking out the trash, the two activities paparazzi caught them doing together most often. It's probably just a nasty rumor that Ryder's friendship with Paltrow ended when Gwyneth "stole" the Shakespeare in Love script from Winona's apartment.
After Affleck, Ryder returned to the music world, dating--in rapid succession--every rocker on the indie scene. No, not really. Just Rhett Miller, Beck, Jack White, Ryan Adams, Pete Yorn, Conor Oberst and Page Hamilton to name a few. For fun, she took a brief spin with SNL's Jimmy Fallon, who does a mean Mick Jagger. Still, Ryder seems serious about fortysomething Hamilton, who was her rock during her shoplifting trial and the touchstone she reaches for, even now.
