Love Thy Neighbour (1976)

Show Summary

Eddie Booth is a working class Englishman who didn't think he was racist until a black couple moved in next door!

Bill & Barbie Reynolds are originally from the West Indies & move in next to Eddie & his wife Joan.

The show was written with the idea of making race relations more harmonious by showing people how to laugh at themselves & their actions.

Eddie is a big talker, but usually backs down when Joan or Bill think he's gone too far.

  • Two sets of neighbours; one white, one black. The husbands are always at each others throats while the wives are the best of friends. With a strong racial theme throughout, this comedy was a ratings smash, regularly pulling in 17 million viewers amoreless

One of the most controversial sit-coms ever made, watch any episode and it doesn't take long to see why. Racial insults fly back and forth right from the off, and even in the early seventies this was shocking stuff.

Watching it, it soon becomes clear that white man Eddie always ends up looking the fool.

Even so, some people felt uncomfortable with the racist language and today, like Mind Your Language and Till Death Us Do Part, it remains banished from British TV screens (but ironically, not African ones, where they can't get enough of it).

    Not for the politically correct.moreless
