  • Good, entertaining episode of a very average show with memorable characters.

    7.0
    "Good"
This first episode was quite good in some aspects, but lackluster and even OOC regarding others. "Lupin III" is a series with wonderful characters, far more memorable than the episodes themselves. This one is no exception. I can't really say I fancy the goofy and cartoonish approach to serious situations: all right, it IS actually a cartoon, but as many japan anime do, it alternates serious action-packed moments with corny screwball antics. Personally, I find the transition to be often quite awkard and detrimental to the serious aspects, which are cheapened to the point of becoming almost comical themselves, and not in the positive way.
Anyway, as a first episode this one is not half-bad(considering the simple plot and the aforementioned 70s campiness all around), as it serves well in re-introducing the characters and their quirks. I found quite perplexing the fact that Goemon is unable to cut the boss's skin AND his sword gets smashed to pieces but noone seems to make a big deal out of it, though...if you are a bit familiar with Lupin adventures, you KNOW it's an Earth-shattering event!
Jigen ends up being dumb too (shoot the eyes, you baka!), but it happens almost in almost every OAV and movie too, so it's just a never-ending bad tradition. As I said before, this cartoon has characters much much better than the stories they perform in.moreless

The characters Lupin, Goemon, and Zenigata are named after historic persons. Lupin is supposedly the third generation descendant of the so-called "gentleman thief" from turn-of-the-century France, Arsene Lupin. Ishikawa Goemon is named after a Robin Hood-type thief from 17th century Japan. He met an untimely end by being boiled alive for his crimes. Zenigata is named after a skilled investigator in Japan roughly around the same time as Goemon.
