  • The life of Neville Lytton, an upper-crust divorced journalist who runs the gossip column on a London newspaper newly acquired by an Australian tycoon.

    7.0
This was a ridiculous series, but it didn't really pretend not to be. It was clearly inspired by the antics of Nigel Dempster, a famous, and even rather influential, columnist of the period. As played by Peter Bowles, the hero of the series was quite unbelievable, a gossip columnist with a conscience and liberal attitudes; he even had a dash of self-loathing now and then. If the series had dared show such journalists as servers-up of scurrilous trivia, it might have had more impact, and if it had shown the damaging effects of gossip on people's lives, it might even have been memorable. Instead, it was pure fantasy, but, as such, occasionally absurd enough to be enjoyable, a rather guilty pleasure.moreless
