This show pretended to be hard-hitting stuff and was nothing of the sort, but it took occasional swipes at the popular British magazine "Private Eye" - which actually was (and is) a fearless exposer of the venality of the wealthy and powerful. The fictitious satire magazine featured (for the first time in the series) in this episode is presented as a hypocritical rag promoting tasteless scandal with no interest in facts. John Bird, a leading figure in the "satire boom" of the 1960s, is ironically cast as one of its editors, a thoroughgoing sleazeball. Of course, Nigel Dempster, the gossip columnist upon whom Lytton is based, did leave the "Eye" amidst considerable acrimony, so maybe this episode was written as revenge.moreless
