An enjoyable episode as it starts out with MacGyver playing a game of ice hockey against The Squires. Pete has another job for him though as Simmons is selling some of the countries most precious and top secret technology to the East German's.

Jimmy "The Eraser", who has been in jail for the last 10 years meets up with his old boss, Papa Chuck. Papa Chuck has a new assignment for him, to kill Simmons. So you have Jimmy and MacGyver looking for Simmons. Jimmy meets MacGyver at a bar and tells him that he is Simmon's father, so MacGyver believes him and they end up being good friends.

When MacGyver finally catches Simmons, he calls Jimmy to come down and meet him. Only Jimmy gets out a gun and MacGyver doesn't know whats going on. MacGyver convinces Jimmy to not kill him and takes him back to the Foundation.

Because Jimmy didn't kill Simmons, Papa Chuck now has a contract out on Jimmy. MacGyver helps Jimmy get safely out of the country and Pete gets him a new identity and a job that he will love.

There are some great MacGyver tactics in this episode as he opens an electrical door by power surge. Links a car phone with the car's computer, to lock all the doors and shut down the engine. Uses some cellaphane and a comb to make a fake police siren, which is quite funny.

Overall, en enjoyable episode and I recommend it.
  • The addition of one of the series' better characters, Jimmy "The Eraser" Kendall, helped this one shine.

One of my least favorite aspects of the second season was the overabundance of folksy narrative voiceovers, and this episode stands out as the most egregious offender of that faux pas. The network basically dictated the series adopt this narrative format over the objections of both producers and RDA, in attempt to make the MacGyver character less mysterious and more personable, and in my opinion the show suffered for it. With that said, the overall plot of "The Eraser" was well-crafted and holds up well, particularly the interesting character Jimmy Kendall played by character actor Joe Santos, who was always entertaining on Hardcastle and McCormick during that series' run. MacGyver faking out mob hitmen by feigning a police siren with a comb and a piece of plastic will go down as one of the all-time most improbable MacGyverisms, but nonetheless amused. This was the first episode written by Stephen Kronish, who would go on to be one of the most prolific TV writers in the business, working on series such as "Wiseguy", "The Commish", "Profiler", and "24".
