Slow paced but impressive ending

Macgyver falls for the ultimate femme fatale in this memorable episode. Of course, we can't blame him, who would suspect this stunning little beauty who he meets in an art class would be the bad guy? Millions of dollars are at stake if Macgyver and the Phoenix Foundation block a marina being built by their environmental survey. So the owner's hire the "negotiator" Deborah to drive Macgyver off the project. She begins with subtle methods, but ultimately is left with no choice but to kill Macgyver. Naturally, the episode starts a bit slow as Macgyver falls for Deborah, but it helps lead to a pretty climactic end where Macgyver, who is near helpless from flash blindness, is brought to an abandoned warehouse to be killed. The thunderstorm really sets the mood for this scene, which is one of the best endings in the series.moreless

MacGyver does a study on a marina project and the environmental effects it may have. The business people that are building the marina want Mac out of the way and hire a "negotiator" to buy him off, kill him off, or somehow stop him from stopping their project. The negotiator is a girl and becomes Mac's girlfriend. She tries to talk him out of it and then tries to kill him. In the end, when he's partially blind because of the effects of an explosion, he stops her and tells his results of the enviromental study. Overall, this episode was pretty predictable and a bit slow. However, it had some good parts and an ok story. Overall, ok episode.moreless

I'm not a daytime soap fan, but Kristian Alfonso seemed born to play the cold-blooded hit woman she so effectively portrayed in this great episode. Watching her calculated methodology unfold was particularly memorable, and the immediate romantic chemistry she struck up with the pathological loner MacGyver was convincing. The viewer was almost led to believe MacGyver knew this was too good to be true, and particularly in the midst of the rainy evening drive, finally grew to accept that he was being played by this femme fatale. For that reason, the temporary blindness served as one of the best narrative metaphors this series ever employed, culminating in the dark and suspenseful final scene in the abandoned warehouse. The epilogue, in which the "negotiator" sold out her employer to cut a deal, tied a nice bow on the top of this episode, with a chilling freeze-frame of MacGyver looking even more heartbroken and embittered than his previous bad experiences with love had set him up for. Scribe Calvin Clements, Jr. was an underrated scriptwriter for this series, but I wish he would have thought of a better way for Phoenix Foundation suits to discover Deborah was MacGyver's tormentor than seeing the traces of lynx hair in the stabbed dog. Would a professional hit woman ever be that careless? I would think not.moreless
