  • MacGyver rises to the occasion with a clever post-Cold War storyline partially set in the former East Germany.

The end of the Cold War presented a challenge to MacGyver, which was for all intents and purposes the last remaining action-adventure show on television in the fall of 1990. The series shifted more to domestic threats in its final seasons, but also deftly walked the tightrope by featuring some post-Cold War "restructuring" storylines set in former Soviet bloc countries in central and Eastern Europe. Along with "Humanity" earlier in the season, Rick Drew's layered and cleverly crafted script "The Wall" also sparkled. The haunting imagery of the old Berlin Wall introduced the story well, and the story expanded impressively from there, ultimately leading to former East German Stasi agents to collect the laundered gold disguised as toy soldiers in an American toy shop. Seeing MacGyver unleashed in a toy shop also made for an intriguing and enjoyable concept at the episode's end. The only part of the episode that lost me was the epilogue. It was kind of fun to see MacGyver squirm when the pretty lady was flirting with him, but I simply never able to buy the concept of pacifist MacGyver falling for the hate-filled former Stasi hit woman Maria Romburg. Fans apparently agreed with me, as their romantic dalliance lasted all of two episodes.
