  • When I heard this was coming out in 1992 I was so excited, but it ended up being the biggest let down.

Macross II picks up after the original Macross series some years later and was co-production between LA Hero and Big West. The biggest problem is that the people who were responsible for the original Macross series and movie were not involved with this project since they did not want to make any sequels to Macross. You could tell just from the first OVA that both the storyline and animation quality were sub-par.

This series was supposed to resurrect the Macross series, but thankfully wasn't a nail in the coffin. The fan response to this was very negative, but showed that everyone had a desire to see more Macross.

This abomination did have a good side effect...

2 years later Shôji Kawamori the creator of Macross wanted to erase the fact that Macross II ever existed. He went on the develop the OVA series Macross Plus which was a huge success and the tv show Macross 7.

Currently Shôji Kawamori created Macross Zero which is an amazing blend of 3d and cel animation. The story is focused on the time period after what would become the SDF-1 crashed on earth and the original Macross series.

As far as Macross II goes now it isn't even recognized within the Macross continuum.moreless
  • Has a very good story line, but may not be enjoyable for those who want a bit more action.

This is for the most part a dramatic piece of work. It goes into great detail and if you don't enjoy those types of themes, than I'd suggest going elsewere, because this OVA is just that an Anime that is a Drama, which in my opinion isn't a bad thing.
