Despite the overwhelmingly sexy feel of Mad Men (power+money+the early 60's+a great wardrobe=sexy), I've observed that the men of this show, taken singularly, are almost universally unattractive. With the exception of Don Draper, who oozes sex appeal from every pore, and Roger Sterling, who's only appealing when his mouth is shut, the men on this show are nothing special. We've got junior high-holdover geeks Pete and Ken, the embarassingly insecure Paul, Harry, and Duck (who is headed for a suicide, mark my works), and Sal, who looks sexy in his suit but a little light in his loafers.
This has to be by design. After all, an office full of Don Drapers wouldn't feel very realistic, and Don wouldn't be who he is at the office if he was surrounded by more Dons. What amazes me is how beautiful these wives men/girlfriends are. Harry's wife is the only one I would come close to describing as "plain". I mean, what in the world does Pete's wife see in him? Thoughts?
