The title of this episode of Mad Men comes from a song by Frank Sinatra written by Hilliard and Mann. In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning was one of Sinatra's iconic songs and the title of one of his first concept LPs in 1954.
As Don is driving in the middle of the night, a broadcast plays part of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s "I Have a Dream Speech" which took place in Washington on August 28, 1963.
On Sunday, 15th September, 1963,Robert Chambliss, a member of the Ku Klux Klan, placed a bomb under the steps of the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church, killing four young girls.
