Madame Bovary is the Masterpiece Theatre miniseries adaptation of Gustave Flaubert's classic novel, Starring Francesca Annis as Emma Bovary. Emma is a typical country woman who hides a craving for a more thrilling life, aspiring to a life of love, passion, and excitement. She marries a simple country doctor, but finds her quiet life unfulfilled. She attends a grandiose ball, and her desire for an exciting and glamorous life grows stronger. She tries to emulate the lives of the heroines in her favorite romance novels, and she begins having an affair with a wealthy bachelor. She soon learns that the thrilling and passion filled life can come with a price. The adaptation brings the classic story of adultery, passion, and pain to the small screen with a supporting cast including Tom Conti, Gabrielle Lloyd, Ray Smith, and Brian Stirner.
