Mahabharat

Show Summary

Mahabharat is a successful Indian Hindi language television show based on one of the two ancient Sanskrit epics of the same name. The basic plot is summarized as an archetypical, Hatfield-McCoy style family feud that took place between two groups of Indian nobility: the Pandava princes and their cousins, the Kaurava kings. The show first aired in 1988, and at the height of its popularity, garnered over 100 million viewers. It is directed by a winning combination of B.R Chopra and Ravi Chopra, famous for their work on early Bollywood cinema. Along with the award-winning music by critically-aclaimed Indian composer Rajkamal, the show features an ensemble cast that is highlighted by Harish Bhimani as the voice of Samay (Time), Mukesh Khanna as Bheeshma, and Nitish Bharadwaj as Krishna. The author of the Mahabharat, Vyasa, is played by Rajesh Vivek. The show is dramatic at times, comedic in the right places, and epic in sprawl, as it follows the waxing and waning of the respective clans and their interactions with one another. If Ken Kesey's 'Sometimes A Great Notion' were based on an Indian epic, this is the television show that would come out of that mash-up.moreless
