  • After the collapse of a building has occasioned many deaths, the Minister of Public Works asks Maigret to investigate the disappearance of a report which had warned of the possibility.

    Maigret finds himself involved in the murky world of politics, and soon wishes he were back dealing with mere thieves and murderers. The realisation that the Minister's unscrupulous rival is perfectly willing to destroy people's lives for advancement- and to avenge a trifling slight - cuts deep; Maigret prefers the simpler world of the criminal classes. As this villain, Jon Finch looks like the young James Mason and - as on previous occasions - sounds rather like Peter O'Toole; an impressive display of self-righteous unpleasantness. One oddity - several characters have their first names (Charles, Eugene, Arthur) pronounced in the English manner rather than the French one.moreless
