    Mr. Brown is a mystery man - every month he goes to the south of France for a few days, but whilst he is there, he seems to disappear. When he is murdered in Paris, Maigret has to cope with the intelligence community, who do not want Brown's secrets revealed, and also with Brown's brother, who proves something of an irritation to the inspector. This role is taken by Paul Eddington, twenty years before he found television immortality in "Yes, Minister", and the supporting cast also features the Scottish music-hall artiste Renee Houston as a dubious lady called "Madame Ja Ja".
