This opening episode certainly indicated - and within its first few minutes - that it wasn't going to be like any previous drama series the BBC had ever made. It began with sexy young women taking their clothes off in front of men! This was not the "Auntie BBC" image we were used to. Not long after that, we found out that the dead stripper was sleeping with Maigret's junior assistant, Lapointe - again, not the sort of behaviour we then normally associated with a young sidekick of the hero. The sordid world of down-market Montmartre was unsparingly shown, and we quickly realised that Maigret was a hero who could function at all levels of society without turning a hair. The murdered stripper was played by April Olrich, who got lots of TV work in the late 50s and early 60s, but was little seen after the swinging decade was over.moreless
