The very first of the Maigret stories, first published in 1929, becomes one of the very last of the Inspector's TV adventures. Playing the mysterious Lett whose visit to France bodes ill for someone, Marius Goring gives a very stylish performance. The episode is directed by the great Rudolph Cartier, for many years the most renowned drama director in British television, a man whose reputation at the BBC was easily the equal of that of Sidney Lumet or Franklin Schaffner in America. That we are nearing the end, not just of the fourth season, but of the series itself is made clear when, shockingly, one of the regular cast is unexpectedly murdered.moreless
