    "Great"
Although most of the Maigret novels are quite short, the requirements of condensation, so that the story fits an hour of television, can cause things to be speeded up, and one of the virtues of this series was the way it maintained the quality of atmosphere so central to the novels even when the events had to be taken at a faster clip. In this adaptation, Maigret guesses the real significance of the cactus plant (in the novel, simply a "green plant" in a copper pot) very early on - in the novel, the plant isn't even mentioned until the story is three-quarters over. The robbery which sparks off the action proves unimportant, and Maigret solves, more or less by accident, a far earlier and more brutal crime.moreless
