This is based on a very famous Simenon story, "La Nuit De Carrefour", an early adventure of the inspector which has the distinction of being the first of the stories to be adapted for the cinema. Jean Renoir's 1934 film - starring his brother Pierre as Maigret - remains a classic of French cinema, and, whilst this version of the story doesn't achieve the same level, it scores with its fine acting. Gerard Heinz's performance as the kindly old man who trusts his much younger wife rather too much stays in the memory, whilst Lisa Daniely makes this dubious young woman a complex and not entirely unsympathetic creature. "All people are good," says the old man at the end; "No," replies Maigret, sadly, "Only some."moreless
