There had been a pilot episode of sorts to the "Maigret" series when a Sunday-night play of 1959 was adapted from "Maigret and the Lost Life". Maigret was played, not by Rupert Davies, but by Basil Sydney. The most prominent supporting role was occupied by Henry Oscar, playing the awkward and difficult Inspector Lognon. The emphasis was far more on him than on Maigret's regular supporters, Lucas and Lapointe. When the series got under way the following year, Lognon returned, still played by Oscar, in this episode. Simenon was a considerable Americanophile, and even lived in the United States for ten years, so it was perhaps not too surprising that he would write a Maigret story in which Mafia types arrive in Paris.moreless
