This story was also adapted for the revived "Maigret" series with Michael Gambon in the early 1990s, and that version, probably the best in the Gambon series, was an improvement on this one. Still, the horrors of village life in the provinces are effectively conveyed. The fact that the nosy old woman who got murdered was almost entirely disliked matters less to the bigoted locals than the fact that her death allows them to get back at a stranger, the nervous teacher who's unpopular simply because he isn't from the region. The plot is nicely complicated, with lies following lies and only Maigret really interested in finding the truth.moreless
