      • The first U. S. submarine, "The Turtle", was used in the Revolutionary War and was designed to sneak up on the enemy ships and stick a bomb just under the waterline and blow it up. The bomb would never stick, however, and the sub had to detonate it further away causing mayhem but no damage. Edit
