Reese's genius list includes: Hypnotist, Archbishop, Dictator for life, Skyscraper repairman, twin, fireproof, talks to animals, x-ray vision, and Hostage Negotiator. Earlier in the episode he also tried escape artist and math genius.
This is the second time Malcolm spoke with a school official with disastrous results, the first time being when he spoke with the school councilor in order to get out of Krelboyne class.
By taking the IQ test and answering every question wrong, Dewey is deemed emotional disturbed and put into the Busey class. However, IQ tests are not designed to test emotional or mental problems. Failing one could result in placement in a remedial class, as was discussed for Reese at one time, but not into a class for emotionally disturbed individuals.
Craig reveals that playing Jump Jump Dance Party is cheaper than a gym, most likely the in-character explanation for his weight loss.
Bryan Cranston said that it took he and Dave Higgins six weeks of practicing on and off to prepare for the Jump Jump Dance Party scenes.
Malcolm calls the class the emotionally disturbed class, the Buseys.
Every time Chad is shown he has a different sign (this is a recurring theme throughout the rest of the show). In this episode the signs are:
- "Don't touch, bites" on his front and on his back, "Don't ignore the sign"
In this episode it appears that Dewey goes to Junior High (the school looked just like the one Malcolm and Reese went to), however, earlier this season it was revealed (through an envelope) that he was in elementary. Even if he is in grade 6, which is considered elementary, the school would be a Public Senior (what they call 6, 7, 8 schools).
(Malcolm tries to keep Dewey out of the Krelboyne class.)
Malcolm: Trust me, I'm the good brother. I'm the one who cares about you.
Dewey: But you beat me up and make fun of me.
Malcolm: Only when you're being annoying. Dewey, I'm serious. How can I make you understand? The coolest person in the class... was me!
Dewey: Okay, I'll do it.
Hayley: You can't enter the tournament. You're going to look like idiots.
Hal: We're not done rehearsing. We'll be a lot better by then.
Kylie: No, you're going to look like idiots because it's a contest for kids.
Craig: It doesn't say that anywhere. I read the rules three times. And we're under the weight limit. You can call the manufacturer.
(as Hal & Craig play "Jump Jump Dance Party")
Davey: Can one of you have a heart attack so the rest of us can play?
Craig: In a second.
Dewey: Today we learned about our greatest enemies, Mr. Matches and Mr. Talk Out of Turn.
Dewey: My imaginary friends are right! I AM a genius!
Cold Open: Otto and Francis hold a meeting where they intend to blow up a dam, however they left the bomb in a car so it gets blown up instead.
At the beginning of the episode, the song that Craig and Davey dance to is "Milkshake" by: Kelis. The first song that Craig and Hal dance to is The Hampsterdance Song. The second dance that Craig and Hal dance to is a remade version of "Double Dutch Bus", originally by Frankie Smith. The song that Kylie and Haley dance to in the competition is a remixed version of "All Around the World" by Cooler Kids. The song Hal and Davey dance to in the competition is a remixed version of "Sometimes When We Touch".
Dave Higgins receives the "And" credit.
First appearance of recurring characters Hanson (Danny McCarthy (IV)) and Chad (Cameron Monaghan).
This episode is the first foreshadowing of Francis being absent during most of next season, as he only appears in the cold open, and is then absent for the rest of the episode.
First appearance of the junior high school since season 3 episode "Cliques" when Malcolm went there.
Hal's dancing sequence at the end of the episode was nominated for an Emmy for "Outstanding Choreography."
When Reese is musing on what type of genius he is, he rattles off some numbers which he incorrectly multiplies and says 'Okay, so I'm not Rainman'.
Rainman is a movie about an autistic gentleman (played by Dustin Hoffman) who has considerable mathematical skills. The movie also starred Tom Cruise.
Lois: (accepting Hal's obsession with dance) Goodnight Fred. (to Craig) Ginger.
Craig: I thought it was Fred and Barney.
Craig confuses dance pair Fred Astaire & Ginger Rogers with cartoon duo Fred Flintstone and Barney Rubble.
Game: Jump Jump Dance Party
This is a spoof of the popular dancing game, Dance Dance Revolution.
Craig: Oh, oh... here comes Yoko.
When Hal and Craig are practicing in the middle of the night, Lois wakes up and gets down to the living room. Craig murmuring: "Oh, oh... here comes Yoko."
This is an allusion to Yoko Ono, John Lennon's wife, who is often said to be responsible for The Beatles breaking up.
