In a previous episode, Otto spoke of Rutger Hauer in glowing tones, hoping he'd one day be able to fluff his pillow. It is revealed that Otto and Gretchen's son is named Rutger.
The computer Malcolm finds is referred to as a Nortair 680B in the show. In reality, it's actually a part from the Altair 8800. The 8800 was released on December 19th, 1975 and is widely considered to be the device that started the era of personal computers. In 1990 it went on display in the Smithsonian, and remains there today. It is in fact an extremely rare and valuable find if one is found in working order. One in mint condition would be worth a small fortune.
There are two noteworthy revelations in this episode: we learn that Hal is a bleeding-heart liberal and that Otto and Gretchen have an estranged son.
Dewey: This is stupid. Why are we sorting everything by color?
Reese: Because I say so. And because alphabetical order was slowing us down.
Dewey: Us?
Malcolm: I want you to buy this, with cash, in front of everybody and everyone should've listened to me all along.
Craig: You know, you sound like a James Bond villain.
Malcolm: There's nothing wrong with me. I'm fine, and rok... and right!
Dewey: That's my piggy bank that was in my room!
Reese: Relax, dipwad - I got 2 bucks for it.
Dewey: It had 16 dollars in it!
Reese: Chick, Chick, Chicken.
Cold Open: Dewey rushes home to tell Malcolm about a plan to scare Reese by proving aliens exist, until Malcolm tells him he is over thinking and yells out that "aliens landed down the street". Reese rushes out with a football helmet and a baseball bat yelling "every man for himself".
It is learned that Craig's cat, Jellybean, did in fact survive the ill fated events of the episode "Reese Drives." Craig fell from the roof and landed on Jellybean.
Dave Higgins receives the "And" credit.
Lois (Jane Kaczmarek) returns in this episode after missing the last three. Her last appearance was "Long Drive."
Dewey's minor plot of selling everything in the house is very similar to the one used in the Rugrats episode of the same name, however, Dewey does it intentionally.
Hal's sub-plot of running a pirate radio station, and then having to broadcast on the run when the FCC is closing in, is very similar to the 1990 Christian Slater movie, Pump Up the Volume.
