  • dual maternal themes

This episode operates on a couple levels. It is about emancipation and yet final surrender to the mother/wife figure. While Malcolm attempts to liberate Dabney from his controlling, overbearing mother, we see Hal regressing with his jr. high school friend back to an unsupervised state of reckless disarray. In the end, we hear him speaking to Lois (he believes) on the phone and admitting that he prefers to blindly and mindlessly obey whatever she orders him to do than think for himself since he just gets himself into trouble. This works against the parallel theme of Dabney's violent and successful self emancipation from his moma's boy identity. Reese too is reduced to a frightened slave at the hands of a deceiving Dewey when he thinks he is being ordered around by Lois via the phone.

Hal represents the everyman, and he reverts to a Dabney style state of total maternal surrender and obedience to Lois, indicating that Dabney's brief escape is only temporary and that many/most men assume a similar relationship with their wifes as Dabney and Reese once did with their mothers. Reistance is futile. You will be assimilated.moreless
  • I loved it!

Hal's friend, Larry, comes over. He causes chaos by tearing down Hal's bedroom wall to make a nursery and trying to get back at their old boss, who is a kind old man. Otto must sleep with Francis and he has terrors during the middle of the night where he screams very loudly. Malcolm and Stevie help Dabney break away from his mother a bit. She is controlling him and protecting him from everything. Dewey pretends to talk to Lois to make Reese do things for him.

This episode was so great! I loved Dabney's part. I don't like Larry at all. Dewey is really smart! This episode gets a 10 out of 10!moreless
  • Nothing interesting happen in this episode...

    8.1
Well, I think that this episode will be much better, it was not that great, because, well just because it was kind of boring... Malcolm goes out with Dabney's party, which suck by the way, and Malcolm tells Dabney that he should learn to do things on his own, and later Dabney, Stewie, and Malcolm go out to the paintballs where Dabney finally learns how to do things right, Hal gets a visit from a crazy friend of him.moreless

    • Francis: Why is he bringing your things to my room?
Otto: Because I'm staying with you this weekend. I have not slept alone in a bed for 35 years.
Francis: You're planning on sleeping in my bed? With me?
Otto: It would be presumptuous of me to ask a guest.

    • Francis: This is kind of a landmark night for me. My first psychological trauma not caused by my mother.

    • Dabney: Look, Malcolm, I know you think I'm a mommas boy...
Malcolm: No! Mommas boys are laughing at you, with their mothers!

    • (Dewey is singing while Reese shoots rocks at his feet, much like a cowboy would with a six-shooter)
      Dewey: I'm a little teapot, short and--OW!!
Here is my handle, here is my--OW!!
When I get all steamed up, hear me--OW!!
Tip me over and pour me--OW!!

    • Dabney (hysterical, opening fire): Brush your damn hair! Get your own damn towel!
      100... 99... 98... 97...
      Stevie: I call... Dabney's team.

    • (After Larry puts a hole in Hal's house...)
Hal (angry): Larry! What the hell's wrong with you? I invite you over for a few drinks and put a hole in my house. This is exactly why I - (sees small bat in Larry's hand) (now amazed) That little thing did that.
(We then flash to Hal and Larry tearing down the master bedroom wall.)

    • Dabney: Mother will come out of the shower in exactly 17 minutes and will be expecting me to be there holding a clean, warm towel....Let's go.
