  • "It was not until several weeks after deciding to murder his wife that Dr. Bickleigh took any active steps in the matter."

Francis Iles's classic novel - which Alfred Hitchcock once hoped to film, with Alec Guinness playing the quietly murderous medico - made very entertaining TV. This BBC version, spread out over four segments, worked far better than the ITV two-part TV movie of the same book, shown some 25 years later. One key reason for its success is the superbly controlled central performance of Hywel Bennett as Dr. Bickleigh. Several people at the time noted that the addition of moustache and eyeglasses made Bennett closely resemble Dr. Hawley Harvey Crippen; and the sense of mischief lurking under a mousey surface which Bennett projected so subtly kept viewers guessing as to how he'd seek to escape his ghastly wife. But no sentimentality was involved - this cunning little chap is dangerous!moreless
