  • Even if the doctor does get away with the murder of his wife, will he go to the gallows for a crime of which he's innocent?

    9.5
Gruesome details pile up as the doctor faces the attentions of the police, and nobody in this tiny, self-satisfied rural community, it seems, can escape the possibility of horror befalling. The comic ingenuities of Francis Iles's plot go hand in hand with a very real sense of the terrible - the deaths in this story, and not just those occasioned "by malice aforethought", are so very nasty that our ready smiles at the wit of the plot's twists and turns are constantly being dashed from our faces. How far is Dr. Bickleigh a victim of his own lust and of "polite society", and how far is he a monster?moreless
