    • TRIVIA (2)

      • In this series debut, Papa finds that he should attend classes to help him study to become a US citizen. In order to save his pride, Mama attends the classes and tutors her husband in the evenings. Like Mama's Bank Account, the first season of the television series makes it clear that the more practical and level-headed Mama controls the family's budget and finances (in the stage and movie versions, she never really had an actual bank account).

      • As with all episodes, the series premiere begins with some variation of eldest-daugher Katrin narrating the dialog, "I remember the big white house on Elm Street, and my little sister Dagmar, and my big brother Nels, and of course, Papa. But most of all, I remember Mama." The opening narration would change somewhat in later seasons. The beginning and end of each episode was scored with music from Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg - "The Holberg Suite" and "The Last Spring."

    • NOTES (2)

      • Mama is generally credited as being the first television program to have a movie precursor. Many TV shows of that time were adaptations of radio programs. The television series did trim a number of characters, for example, eliminating Katrin's sister Christina, one of Katrin's aunts, and reducing the role of jovial Uncle Chris.

      • Records of this episode and practically all of the predominantly live broadcasts of Mama are essentially lost to time. The cast was famous for adhering to a strenuous live broadcast schedule. According to a 1951 article in Time magazine, an "extra" kinescope episode was filmed in case an emergency prevented a live broadcast - but it was never needed.
