  • Worth watching just to see a genre of entertainment that is long gone. Look for a very simple but family-oriented message.

Dagmar is sure she is going to win the upcoming spelling competition.

When watching "(I Remember) Mama", it's best to have expectations for a type of TV that is long-gone. The sets are spare (some panels look to be made of paperboard) and the plots are neither drama or comedy. The format is much more like a radio serial than anything people know on television today. Unlike the movie version, the situations are quite small in scope. Thankfully for the extensive Maxwell House product placement and narration within the installment, the brand of coffee did actually exist in the 1910s period of the program.

As the story proceeds, Dagmar is rather annoying and boastful (it's hard to blame Katrin for being scornful) whereas Papa is so proud that he bets his co-worker on the outcome of the spelling bee. Nels is written as goofy and happy-go-lucky and only Mama has the reserve and experience to play the situations just about right. As the xylophone picks out homey tunes in the background, an incredible amount of time is spent on the kids actually spelling words - this minor drama is accompanied by Papa worried about his secret wager. The script has the smarts to have Dagmar learn a lesson by losing, her competitor to be caught cheating, and Mama to shame the fathers about putting too much pressure on the kids.

Definitely gentle and a little stiff, but interesting.moreless
