Episode Summary

A Room With No View
Vint has a cold, and Naomi swears it's because they have to sleep in the basement. Being it's damp and just a breeding ground for germs. Meanwhile, Bubba is also upset that Mama cleaned his room and mis-placed his drum sticks. She also refuses to let his 'loser' friends Dwayne and T-Boy, who he's wanting to form a band with, even in the house. Seeing that everyone's already unhappy, Iola suggests they air their grievances in front of the hole family. After hearing everyone's complaints, Iola proposes a plan that the family can vote on, Vint and Naomi will switch rooms with Bubba. That seemingly solves all the problems, being that Bubba can now have his band and Vint and Naomi finally get the bedroom they've always wanted. But Mama refuses until she's out voted and forced to go along. The switch doesn't work as well as planned though with Mama being kept up all night with Naomi's "heavy breathing" and Bubba refusing to stop playing his loud music. It all comes to a head when Mama returns from a delightful day out, to find the house in an uproar. Bubba is soon forced to stop playing his music and decides he no longer wants the basement if he can't have his band, and Vint and Naomi agree, so everyone goes back to status quo.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

  • TRIVIA (1)

    • This episode brings up a topic that's often discussed among Mama's Family fans. What happened to the third bedroom upstairs? In the original NBC series, Mama, Fran and Sonya all had rooms upstairs, while Buzz had the attic and Vint and Naomi took the basement. But suddenly in this episode there's only one other room upstairs. So somewhere along the line Mama's house got smaller by one room, I guess.

  • QUOTES (23)

    • Mama: Iola, you go on in the kitchen. Take the Beastie Boys with you.
T-Boy: Great idea. C'mon Miss Bouland.
Dwayne: Yeah. We can throw bologna on the ceiling and see if it sticks.
Iola: The one time I left home without my can of mace.

    • Vint: Since Mama's gone, I'll hafta be the man of the house.

    • Vint: Stopping people from having fun is Mama's job!

    • Mama: Knock it off you PENCIL NECK GEEKS!

    • Naomi: Good morning Mrs. Harper.
      Mama: Touch me and die!

    • Bubba: Forgot about Grandma. She won't let us have a band down here. She won't even let me have a cardboard girl.
T-Boy: Now Bubba, she's way upstairs. What she doesn't know won't hurt her.
Dwayne: Yeah. She's probably hard of hearing anyway.
Mama: The hell she is! You quit that whispering and get on home!

    • Mama: Don't you think it's time you two boys went home?
      Dwyane: No ma'am.
T-Boy: No ma'am. Out parents don't like us to come home while their still awake.

    • *Bubba causes on of Vint's boxes to fall*
Vint: I hope you didn't break my nightlight.
Mama: And to think that man uses power tools.

    • Mama: Now just a damn minute here! I will not have my house turned upside down just so my family can be comfortable!

    • Naomi: Oh baby, we're gonna have a view of the drive-way!

    • Naomi: It all started when I was five years old. It was winter. My mama took me on a long train ride to go to my Aunt Doreen's funeral. We-
Mama: What in the hell does this hafta do with your dead Aunt Doreen?!
Naomi: Well, for one thing, we both ended up underground!

    • Iola: Now Thelma, that was Bubba's turn to vent his feelings.
Mama: Oh fine. Very well. Go ahead. Vent.
Vint: Oh, is it my turn?

    • Iola: A counselor encourages family members to air their grievances without being belittled or ridiculed.
Mama: What's the point in that?

    • Mama: Fine! If you bellyachers are so unhappy with your living conditions, then why don't you get the hell out?! And don't let the screen door hit ya as ya leave!
Iola: No, this is just awful.
Mama: If you don't like the damn potatoes, don't eat em!

    • Bubba: Well at least you are a citizen! Grandma doesn't give me any rights.
Mama: You have the right to remain silent.

    • Bubba: Grandma, where am I supposed to take my friends?
Mama: Anywhere but here. Don't you know a gutter or a junkyard where you can hang out?
T-Boy: Hey, we can go to my house. We got a gutter and a junkyard.

    • Mama: Well Good Lord, this new Jane Russell girdle has a mind of its own. Well, all I did was bend over and it's gone from a long line to a bikini brief.
*T-Boy and Dwayne sneak up behind Mama*
T-Boy and Dwayne: Morning, Mrs. Harper.
Mama: Well, what are you two goons doing in here?! Bubba! The village idiots are here!

    • Bubba: Once ya get to know T-Boy and Dwayne, you're gonna love em.
Mama: Bubba, don't ever mix me, love, and them two goons in the same sentence.

    • Naomi: All right... no more heavy breathing! You won't hear a peep out us all night!
      Thelma: No more peeping?!

    • Bubba: I'm just an artist trying to express myself!
Naomi: Then, why don't you become a MIME?!

    • Thelma: I can sum it up in three words: In Grati Tude!

    • Thelma: Vent, Vint!

    • Thelma: If HE calls ME SHE ONE more time, HE is going to GET IT!
