Cat's Meow
AIRED:
Iola is distraught when her cat Midnight dies, although everyone else is thankful, noting that the cat was as mean as a rattlesnake. But Iola refuses to let go and nothing can console her---until she decides to have it freeze-dried.She goes all out and buys a model that meows when you pet it.She leaves it with Mama for a while and Mama takes it out to the front porch and leaves it. That's where Vint falls on it as he, Naomi and Bubba are bringing in a trunk they just bought from the police surplus. Thinking they killed the cat, they bury it,and go into to open the trunk.Which has a hole on the side of it and is the home of a Mama cat and her kittens. One of which looks just like Iola's former pet.Who adopts it immediately.moreless

    Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

    FILTER BY TYPE

    • TRIVIA (4)

      • Not once, during the entire time Vint and the others were moving the trunk, did they notice a hole the size for a cat to enter it? Not once, during the entire time the trunk was moved, did the cats inside make ANY attempt to escape through the hole or make any noise at all?

      • The other cats found in the trunk seem to be awfully old or very large for kittens for a mother cat. Plus, the mother cat makes no attempt to stop anyone from picking up her or her kittens? Nor do the kittens try to scratch their way out, either? Lastly, none of the cats in the trunk resemble each other in any way in terms of fur colors, patterns, eye colors, etc. In fact, they appear to be of different breeds each.

      • The cats Thelma and the others keep are never seen again in the series. Even though in future episodes, other animals that should have attracted their attention (a parrot, a dog, a goose) appear around the house and yard.

      • This is the first episode in which Naomi's hair is permed.

    • QUOTES (16)

      • Iola is reacting to the death of her cat Midnight)
Iola: I don't know how I'm gonna break this to mother, what, with her high blood pressure and all.
Mama: Well, you could do it gradually, like, crossing cat food off the grocery list.

      • Iola: It's much better to have a real live kitty than a freeze dried memory.
        Mama: Words to live by.

      • Bubba: "Who ever heard of calling a black cat Sunshine?"
Mama: "Will you shut up, she's fallin' for this!"

      • Mama: "You mean to tell me the three of you couldn't catch a dead cat."

      • Mama: "Okay Thelma, now think. Somewhere out there, on the prowl, is a freeze dried cat. I hate that thought."

      • Mama: "Here kitty, kitty, kitty. Get a grip on yourself Thelma. You're calling to a dead cat."

      • Vint: "Now all we've got to do is come clean and tell the truth. Honesty is the best policy."
Bubba: "Or we can bury him and say he ran away."
        Vint: "Now you're talking!"

      • *Vint, Naomi, and Bubba think Vint killed Midnight by accident*
Bubba: "Wow, riggor mortus has already set in!"

      • Mama: "Good Lord Iola, you had him stuffed?"
Iola: "Oh course not! I'd never do that to my cat. I had him freeze dried."

      • Iola: "It's the latest thing in pet preservation."
Mama: "Well, what will they think of next, and why did they think of this?"

      • Iola: "Okay, open you eyes now."
*Iola is holding up Midnight, and Mama opens her eyes face to face with the freeze dried cat*
        Mama: "AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!"
Iola: "I knew you'd be surprised. Didn't they do a great job on Midnight? Now be honest Thelma, and tell me what you think."
        Mama: "AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!"

      • Mama: "I'm tellin ya, in this dress I'm gonna be the cat's meow."
Iola: "Oh, Midnight!" *Runs out crying*
Mama: "Well, that's the last time I try to cheer her up."

      • *Mama read the directions to make the dress*
Mama: "Good Lord, don't ya just know a man wrote this!"

      • Mama: "I saw Joan Collins in this exact same fabric on Dynasty, cept there wasn't quite this much of it."

      • Mama: "The Annual Church Choir Fundraiser. I was thinking about reserving a table for all of us."
Naomi: "Darn it, I hafta work late that night. When is it?"
        Mama: "This Saturday."
Bubba: "Gee Grandma, I can't go. I have a hot date at the drive-in!"
Mama: "And just what is it that you can do at the drive in that you can't do at church? Don't answer that!"

      • Bubba: "I heard about a guy who found a dead body in a trunk once, all cut up."
Mama: "Well, rush on down there Vinton, maybe you can get one of them."

    • NOTES (2)

      • When Iola tells Thelma that she had Midnight freeze dried, someone in the audience audibly enough to be recorded on the soundtrack says, "Oh, my god!" quite disgustedly.

      • While the cats are never seen afterwards, Iola did have other pets, at least one. She eventually had Thelma baby sit Herman, her pet goldfish, while she was gone in Mama In One. Although how she was able to keep the cat she took from eating Leland is guesswork.
