Double Standard
AIRED:
Buzz and Sonja are getting ready for their Homecoming dance, and Vint tells them to be home by midnight. Both are upset about this, but Sonja, who is older, believes she should stay out later because of her age. Vint tells her she has to be home early because she is a girl. This makes Sonja mad. As the two are getting ready, Vint tells Buzz he can stay out later because he is a boy. Sonja finds this out when they are getting ready to leave, and she storms out. Before midnight, the family is awaiting the kids' return. Buzz comes home by midnight, and Sonja comes in a little later. She and Mama have a talk, and as Sonja is going up to bed, Vint tries to talk to her. Mama defends Sonja and her rights as a woman.moreless

  • Not their finest hour

Although the show was my favorite of all time, this probably was my least favorite episode. And judging by how users have voted, I'm not alone in this. We all know, unfortunately, the double standard is still a common occurence in some homes. I have always thought it was a very backward way of thinking and therefore, doesn't make a very interesting storyline. Sonja and Buzz are going to a school dance and they both end up getting the same curfew even though Sonja is a year older. Vint told her it was because she was a girl. Buzz even got an extra hour to be out to boot. I was quite pleased to see Mama, Naomi, and Sonja gang up on chauvinist Vint and teach him that boys can get into just as much trouble as girls can. Vint was ultimately the loser in the end. But, even so, it wasn't their finest hour.moreless

    • Sonja: We're talking equal opportunities! We're talking equal pay! We're talking equal rights! We're talking equal curfews!!!
Mama: We're talking about all that?
Sonja: Oh, you just don't understand.
Mama: Well now Sonja, just wait a minute, I do, I do too. I understand that right now, there's a whole lot that I don't understand. I don't know why I followed all those rules if their gonna fall apart now.
      Sonja: You're catching on, Grandma.
Mama: Catching on? I don't know what the hell I'm talking about!

    • Sonja: I'm going to run away from home!
Vint: As long as you're home by midnight.
Mama: Oh grow up Vinton. Anything she can do after midnight, she can do before if she wants to!
Vint: Well now, what's that supposed to mean?
Naomi: It means if you want to know what she's doing every minute of the day, you hafta hire a private detective.

    • Vint: You two act like I haven't handled this right, like I'm being unfair, like I'm not a good father, like I haven't got any sense.
Mama: If you're lookin' for an argument Vinton, you'd better change the subject.

    • Sonja: I may be leaving this house "a little girl," but I'm coming back here a woman.
      (Sonja leaves)
Vint: Don't you dare come back here a woman!

    • (Buzz enters the house, while Vint thinks it's Sonja)
      Vint: Hi sweetheart.
      Buzz: Hi darling.
